Great Gadaffi’s Last Stand
Thursday, 24 February 2011 22:11
By Dida HalakeI have taken a much enjoyed sabbatical from writing since November 11 last year and I had hoped that the enjoyment would continue for a full year. I have resisted the temptation to respond to the upheavals around the world, from Ivory Coast to Somalia and from Morocco to Bahrain. But I must write now, in the midst of Colonel Gadaffi’s fight for survival to express my honest views on what is going on in Libya.

Many great leaders have also turned into dictators who have abused the rights of their people. And I am sure that Gadaffi is no exception. But I will not join those now engaged in a total condemnation of Gadaffi – because he is one of those leaders to whom history will undoubtedly be kind. I will just briefly give 3 examples:-
First and foremost, as an African Pan-Africanist, I wish to thank Colonel Gadaffi for his unflinching support of the South African People’s Freedom from Racist Apartheid Rule. His political, and above, financial support for the African National Congress was unwavering – at a time when the leaders of “Democratic” USA and Great Britain condemned Nelson Mandela and the ANC as terrorists. The USA and Britain supported the Racist South African Regime for financial reasons and for 100 years they tolerated the enslavement of the African people in their own country. Gadaffi gave those Africans totally unflinching support. Angola and Namibia too benefited from Gadaffi’s support in their fight for liberation from colonial rule.
Secondly, Gadaffi’s regime as invested its money in Africa – virtually in every African country, unlike the rest of the totally corrupt and dictatorial Arab regimes (totally supported by “Democratic” USA & Britain) who stole billions of their countries wealth to invest in the West.

Thirdly, Gadaffi was at the forefront of the Pan-Arab fight in the 1970s to establish OPEC and claim the oil resources of the Arab World for the Arab World. To this day Gadaffi’s Libya remains a country with NO external debt, massive amount of money in its national treasury, and social expenditure on its peoples welfare which is second to none in the Arab World (the corrupt Saudi King has just offered his subjects 30 billion dollars to stave-off revolt).I could go on and on, but time does not allow. I would accept that Gadaffi certainly over-stayed in power and should have handed over a long time ago. Unfortunately, events have caught up with him now as his people have arisen against his rule.
His Interior Minister and childhood friend has said that Gadaffi “will commit suicide and die on the battlefield” rather than abandon his country and go into exile. I think that is what is expected of a real revolutionary. Gadaffi cannot be caught in a rat hole underground like Saddam, or be jailed like Charles Taylor.
Gadaffi is aware of Roman history. Gadaffi must go, when the time comes, like a Roman General, by falling on his own sword. Let’s see what happens.

We now hear of The Duke Of York and University don's having some difficulties with there "Gaddafi" associations.
I see The Brit Gov have chartered Thomson Holidays to airlift out all the Egyption refugees from Tunisia..at the British tax payers expense?
This ..Whilst we serve Redundancy notices around the country..like confetti?
I don't know if you watched last evening's BBC Question Time...?
We Brits appear to have lost our way?
I think I shall purchase a croft somewhere in The Shetland's and grow spinich and fish for eels???
Thank you for the compliment, which I recall having complemented elsewhere.
I am afraid "my" Observer was very much off the mark with the Gadaffi "masterpiece", quite simply because even wild animals such as wolves and lions do recognise the "sanctity" of the relationship with the human-being who has fed them by own hand since infancy ("Born Free", "Greyfriar's Bobby", etc.). Hence why Chavez and Mandela would never condemn Gadaffi because of the latter's contribution to Third World Liberation and Solidarity. I humbly choose to follow these great men - not "my" Observer!
Have a good day.
I have always thought that you were a scholar of interesting and original "idea's" that you do not hesitate to give.
Perhaps you could educate us a little more with you appraisal of the "masterpiece" on Mr Gaddafi...published in "your" Observer?
You seem to be desperate for a response here (I have received 4 notifications now) so I will oblige!
You say: "I see Mugabe is playing the "racist" card against Britian yet again". You fixation with the race issue is understandable as a former colonialist with a "guilty" tattoo on his forehead! That is why Mugabe keeps winding you up! My free medical advice for you is to JUST IGNORE MUGABE (I appreciate this is difficult for you colonialists to do precisely because Britain CREATED the monster that is Mugabe!). But just relax and ignore Mugabe - we forgive you the rest (afterall, we are now colonising Britain in return). Sleep well.
But this is becoming a "lame duck" argument that better informed African's are coming to realise.?
Mugabe, Gbagbo , Gaddafi , and those yet to be challenged in this years elections.
The free nations need to recognise this and form strategic plan...including withdrawing aid and calling in the IMF loans. Let China and Russia and Iran have Africa.
It is money down the drain.
Britain should only be supporting African countries with true democratic dispension and human rights.
He is also making some very reconcilitory noises.
Perhaps a stalemate..? but not yet a check mate?
Similtaniously..you cannot yet compare the better educated North African to sub saharans.
Although the same peoples revolution will catch fire in Su.Sa. Africa one day..as internet access and education..raise questions over equality, jobs and freedoms...in the minds of the people.
In the meantime Mr Jammeh..{a very underestimated man}
Presents the moderate faces of Faal, Badjie an co. to the people ..in this run up to the GE. These "popular" moves indicate a wise man ahead of the game.
However, I would suspect if a poll of western{better empowered internet} Gambian's..was taken....Mr Jammeh would be ousted.
Hence it remains unlikely...any reunification would be to his advantage?
opinion.
