GPU Executive Director Drops Case After Apology
Friday, 23 September 2011 20:03
(JollofNews) - The Gambia Press Union (GPU) Executive Director Aloa Ahmed Alota has dropped his legal suit against
fellow journalist and reporter of the Gambia News and Report Magazine, Momodou Edrissa Njie, following the latters' decision to apologise the GPU bureau chief.
The two gentlemen of the press had an altercation over a training programme early this month during which Njie was alleged to have threatened to kill Mr Alota hence the suit.
But the matter has now been amicably resolved much to the relief of many journalists.
''I regret very much for my actions and herewith assure the Press Union, Mr Alota and all concerned that I shall henceforth comport myself in a manner worthy of our profession,” Njie wrote in his
two-paragraph statement of apology sent to the complainant on Tuesday. The issue has been a source of concern to many journalists who regarded the incident and the threatened court case as a bad omen for the unity of the press in the country.
"Wisdom has triumphed over human error and one can only hope that the uneasy relations among journalists could be healed by this outcome. Journalists cannot expect progress if the highest principles of truth continue to be eroded'', commented a local journalist.
