Gov't present pitiable spectacle over detention of Gambian air passenger
Saturday, 24 April 2010 00:26
Over 24 hours after a Gambian national, apparently suspected of terrorism offences, was detained by US authorities, the authorities
in Banjul continue to present a pitiable spectacle of 'not being informed' about the incident. From State House in Banjul to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Gambians Abroad, the response seems to be the same: "This is news to us."
The same could be said of the country's security organizations which also claim to not being fully aware of the arrest. Like a song, the same rhetoric has rendered futile our efforts to get any reaction from the Gambian government.
"What do you want me to do for a Gambian detained in Puerto Rico? Try to get in touch with Foreign Affairs," said Sulayman Secka, Police Public Relations Officer.
"Are you informing me? We are not aware of any arrest," said Mr Willy Joof, Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Gambians Abroad.
Reacting to this development, a civil society activist said: "This shows how we are less highly regarded by our governments. When Western countries will deploy all their efforts to rescue their citizens, African governments deliberately choose to ignore the plight of their citizens."
Meantime, Salieu Badjan will have to face a continuing and cruel plight. Unless he is absolved by US investigators, his name will be added to the long list of the victims of African governments' slackness.

You shouldn't compare Africans to the West because in the west, they are not that expose even to their own environment much more the other parts of the world but for the Gambia, how many Gambians have you seen in your life not knowing such a simple things much more of knowing the most important document of our able country, if like the example you want to compare us to the west then you most be sick in the head, and for what i contributed towards the Gambia, I can say nothing financially but I once contributed my energy to served the Gambia on which Iam far more better than you, I used to make half of the Gambians if not all during my service as a squade player, So tell me what you've done for The Gambia better than what I did ?
Good luck Bro.
Citizens of western countries pay big chunks of their incomes on taxes especially in the EU. Ask yourself; how much tax money have you send to gambia government aside from remittances to your family. Remember, there is no such thing as a free meal! Even american citizens who paid taxes, cannot all be rescued from countries like Iran and N.korea
Our government is really run by a bunch of arrogant and utterly inept idiots who are too intransigent to see admit their shortcomings.
What a shame, So how do you think about this ? An officer representing our Mighty State house don't even know that, the Gambian Passport has an expiry date?
It never happens in Kairaba's and his mafia Boys era, even though we used to call them semi-educates !
But only on Arafang Yahya's time this do happen.. Jeelanka you've to screen the state house abit to knowing such things.
