GNOC elects new president
Sunday, 13 February 2011 00:30
Momodou M Dibba is the new president of the Gambia National Olympic Committee, Mr Dibba received 26 votes out of the 40 registered
votes after his rival, Aboulie Baks Touray who had never agreed with the legitimacy of the electoral list, pulled out of the contest. Sources close to the election hall says there was a heavy presence of security
amid unconfirmed claims that an order was given to stop the process. Officials from the Independent Electoral Commission conducted the elections. While it was not immediately clear what Baks Touray's next plans might be, his supporters described his decision not to contest as a tactical withdrawal. The GNOC election is the most divisive issue ever in Gambian sports, shaking both the law making body and executive arms of the country, with some even alleging that the judiciary too has been dragged to the fracas. While some delegates and observers expressed hope that Saturdays' elections marks the end of the crises, others felt there might be another twist as no one knows what Touray's camp have in their sleeves by embarking on a last minute 'tactical withdrawal''.
