Genevieve's The Mirror Boy premiered in Ghana
Sunday, 19 June 2011 13:49
The Director of the Mirror Boy (the latest African movie making huge waves on the international scene), Obi
Emelonye has told the media that the movie which cast Nollywood star Genevieve Naji marks the new era in the movie industry in Africa.Mr Emelonye said the movie is an African story produced in the Peoples Republic of Gambia and the UK but through the lens of a Nigerian lead cast supported by renowned actors from around the world.

Mr Emelonye who was speaking at a press conference to introduce the movie to Ghanaians explained that the movie was inspired by his seven-year-old son who lives in the UK and is battling his dual citizenship and identity status. He revealed that the movie is an attempt to bring to light the plight of many of such young Africans in Europe.
The Mirror Boy is a family adventure produced by OH FILMS’ Patrick Campbell. The movie made history earlier this year when it hosted the biggest UK premiere of an African film at the world's famous Empire Leicester Square as well as being the widest released Nollywood film in the UK across 10 Odeon cinemas on the 10th of June.
The Mirror Boy features two of Nollywood’s megastars Genevieve Nnaji (The Last Party, Ije) and Osita Iheme (‘Popo’ of Aki & Popo, Mr Ibu).
It tells a compelling and uplifting story of a young British born African teenage boy named Tijan [Edward Kagutuzi] who is taken back to The Gambia - the birth land of his mother Teema [Genevieve Nnaji].
Once in The Gambia, Tijan gets mysteriously lost in a crowded street market after witnessing a strange apparition. He then embarks on a magical journey that teaches him about himself and the mystery of the father he has never met.
A Nollywood movie shot in The Gambia
Shot in the truly beautiful terrain of the Republic of The Gambia by the multi-award winning DOP Clive Norman and boasting high quality production values, The Mirror Boy is regarded by many in the international film business to be the Nollywood movie that can finally match its industry’s new found status. This was illustrated at the recent Monaco Charity Film Festival where actress Genevieve Nnaji was awarded the Best Breakthrough Performance (female) for her role in the movie earlier this month.
Genevieve who was at the press conference preceding the premiere on Friday said she fell in love with the character immediately it was handed to her and for the first time she saw herself playing second fiddle to a young actor around whom the movie revolves.
Osita Iheme who was also at the press conference said Gambia was ideal for the kind of story the movie was supposed to tell and as one of the main characters, he enjoyed every bit of it.
He said he believes The Mirror Boy will set a new standard in the movie industry on the continent.
The premiere took place at Silverbird Cinemas on the Friday evening with a host of Ghanaian celebrities.
The theatrical release in Ghana is being supported by Joy FM, Ghana's premier radio station.
