GAMCOTRAP enlists fathers’ help in effort to eradicate FGM

Gamcotrap_Training_Pix_1By Abdoulie John
In its crusade against Female Genital Mutilation (FGM), the Gambia Committee on Traditional Practices affecting The Health of Women and Children (GAMCOTRAP), Thursday, September 16, 2010, organized a day-long training for mothers and fathers from within the Gambian settlement of Ebo Town on the eradication of harmful traditional practices.Gamcotrap_Training_Pix_1
Centered on the double objective of increasing awareness on harmful traditional practices amongst men and women, and working towards its banning, the training constitutes an illustration of the good partnership existing between GAMCOTRAP and Allamuta Kafo of Ebo Town, an advocacy group very active in the fight against FGM.
Addressing the gathering, GAMCOTRAP Executive Director Dr Isatou Touray recalled that the training was the result of recommendations by members of Allamuta Kafo who demanded for training for men as fathers to join them in the fight against harmful traditional practices. She delved on the importance of continuing ongoing dialogue at the grassroots level for gradual change, vis-à-vis FGM.
Held at the B.O. Semega Janneh Hall in Talinding, the training session which brought together 100 participants from the area was also graced by National Assembly Members (NAM). Dr Touray sought to urge lawmakers to consider the perspective of legislating a bill banning FGM, citing women and girls as at the centre stage of human development effort.
Deputy Mayor of KMC Yusupha Sanyang, speaking on behalf of the Mayor, reiterated the support of the municipality to efforts deployed by GAMCOTRAP towards eradicating FGM. KMC, he noted, will always support such initiatives essentially based on dialogue with communities that are directly affected by the practice.
Consequently, he seized the opportunity to point out the fact that women play a key role in society and need to open their minds to the effects of FGM on the girl’s health.
Mixed views
In a chat with JollofNews, Imam of Ebo Town, Musa Y. Jobarteh, paradoxically described the practice as being in line with the Mohammedan tradition. He pointed to the usual argument in favour of the practice, protection for the girl in controlling her sexual feeling in the future.
Ebo Town’s deputy Alkalo Nfally Jarju, however, adopted a different tone by expressing his satisfaction to GAMCOTRAP’s initiative that he said gears towards eradicating a practice shared by many tribes and cultures and which has done serious harm to the lives of generations of women and girls. In spite of the general perception, Jarju said, not everything is good in our tradition and culture…

Quoting Badara Saja:

I know if my late father knew the whole issues about this insane practice, he will never let my sisters go through such CULTURE of his forefathers.

Well, Badara, I want to tell you that, our those fore-Fathers you are talking of, just look at their time when we doesn't have all these advance machines within our hands but with the leaves and roots of the cultural treatments, they were far more better than us (I mean our present generation)

So tewll me the use of the latest machines at the Labs when we are claiming more deaths cause by the socall FGM ? When it is the lack good morals in our society, Go to the Kombos today, you will see how our young girls are displaying their boobs out and stuff when we never saw niether Kinteh-Jula nor Dr. Touray talking of such things which are clear indication to this, but they we let their mouths to talk on the un-neccessary !

People like Lalo Kebba never have any genuine reason to oppse worthy causes like these; his only reason is his beef with the 'Wazungus'. I am sure fi this was an entirely African initiative, i mean the campaigns, Lalo would agree, because inside him something is telling him that this is indeed not good. It is a human right medical issue, for God's sake!

Mr Lalo Kebba

It is just a silly joke from me to you as males. I know you still do have some humour left in you.

That said, I really believe this is an inhumane and unnecessary men perception of how a woman should be. Am sure it has cause lot of suffrage and deaths in small girls in the African continent if thorough research is done.

I know you are a man of reason and appeal to you to withstand from such MALE made barbaric, cruel and torture of our little girls. I know if my late father knew the whole issues about this insane practice, he will never let my sisters go through such CULTURE of his forefathers.

I think the GAMCOTRAP should concentrate in advising young girls and women to desist from bleaching and prostitution in our country. I have just notice that some of the top management of the GAMCOTRAP are also blearing their skin. They should be advising young women and girls to be organic is the best.

Mr Lola kebba

I wouldn’t call you a BANANA since I got a BANANA too..

I don’t know what OUR BANANAs benefit in letting such act continues.

I think we have learned a lot about that, this man instigates practice and it is time to bury it for eternity.
I am sure, if our BANANAS can talk, this would have been abolished since creation of Africa.

Trust me; it would not make us less man at all!!

Sometimes a week orso ago, we've seen here the same tune from Kinteh-Jula talking in the same tune of FGM andnow Dr. Touray !
I don't know where our educated people are trying to lead mother Africa to?

Are your education are just for this worldly gain or should be for you to defend your cultures and other aspects in your African life which many of your fellows are not bless with ?
That is why I threw my Hat on Imam Jobarteh and many who are challenging you and we will remain to challeng you till the time youwill see the light of your ancestors here, If not,

Call me a Banana !

GAMCOTRAP, Is a failed Organization and will remain to fail in their Agendas within the Sene-Gam-Bissau Region, Why not Dr. Touray and her people address on isuues such as the way woem and girls dress during these days, Is that because of the FGM they are dressing like that Madam Touray? Or is it all lack of moral in our midst ? When Africans left their noble cultures and traditions venturing into that of the WAZUNGUs, we will always be experiencing such a bad societies within our environments no doubt.
So Madam Dr. try to seeing the way of changing your GAMCOTRAP to a well
"GAMCO-MORAL" organozation that will help you and your fellow women to build the able moral of our girls betterthan keeping on enjoying the money of the WAZUNGUs without telling them what your SeneGamBissau region is in need of !

And for the Imam of Ebo Town, Musa Y. Jobarteh, please be on where you are God or Allah will always be with you.

In the service of SeneGamBissau I remain
