The Gambia's President Yahya Jammeh has won a fourth term in office in Thursday's election, taking 72% of the vote, the election commission has said.

Electoral chairman Mustapha Carayol said voter turnout had been 83%.

Opposition candidates Ousainou Darboe and Hamat Bah took 17% and 11% respectively, he said.

Ahead of the poll, the West African regional body Ecowas said the vote would not be free or fair because of intimidation by the governing party.

The 15-nation bloc said its investigations found "an opposition and electorate cowed by repression and intimidation" and it refused to send election observers to the tiny West African country.

But observers from the African Union (AU), Commonwealth and the Organisation of Islamic Co-operation (OIC) did monitor the poll.

Civil liberties

Mr Jammeh came to power in a bloodless coup 17 years ago.

After he cast his vote on Thursday he said he was in no doubt that he would win.

"In 17 years, I have delivered more development than the British were able to deliver in 400 years," he told the BBC.

"Do I look like a loser? There is no way I can lose unless you tell me that all Gambian people are mad," he said.

Mr Jammeh's government has been criticised by international rights groups for its attitude to civil liberties, especially freedom of the press and the detention and disappearance of journalists.

In response to such criticism, he said on Thursday: "The journalists are less than 1% of the population and if anybody expects me to allow less than 1% of the population to destroy 99% of the population, you are in the wrong place."

Welcome Brother Radiokangkang, and so do we returning the thank you message to you there and your fellow supporters of Arafang, even though I am not Jammeh fan but I don't see why I should be anti Jammeh in front of a "Wazungu or Ama Bhulu Man, if this is what some labeling as Arafang Yahya's fan then let it be.

May I thank God too for after 9 good Years of Sheickh Bairo Sana Sabally in prison, He is still kicking !
May Allah give him more strength, since many who joined him in mile 2 are now at the other side of the world, such as the recent of Baba kajally Jobe.

Yes the IEC might get it’s share of blame but to me the major one is them the opposition, how they presented themselves at the last hour. This was completely destructive and humiliating and gave no trust to the opposition supporters that this again created factions among them, forcing others to either stay away or join the APRC. For one to have confidence on you, he/she must read how you present yourself. You must be able to convince that you stand to be the right person at the right place.

Cont from below:
I will continue to receive abusive responses but as long as this is the same opposition and irresponsible articles continue, then I stand by the choices of the majority home. I will comment on what I think, know and disagree. If we start talking rubbish here and the people home make their choices because they got no sense from our political theories which they only think harm the country who to blame? Is only common sense that change my position and I will always remain to be with the majority when common sense fail.

. A lot of irresponsible articles and comments are (Freedom Radio) always made that I sometimes ask myself if these people differentiate Jammeh and Gambia. Other Diaspora media excluding Jollofnews, criticize an opposition party to help an opposition party, all this creating more divisions. You say their weaknesses then they associate you with tribalism. We have 100’s of Gambians who despite disagree with Jammeh distant themselves because of the irresponsible comments they making in the name of fighting Jammeh. Can one expect one to support such? I even say some vote for Jammeh because no choice but I will receive very abusive response. Now instead of discussing the realities, it’s one defending your master or party. Any opposition to be vibrant and recognized must be supported and accepted by people home first. It must sensitize people base on Unity and development, not about the arrest and killings they going to make.

Mike
As long as these opposition leaders remain to challenge Jammeh, then I see Jammeh continuous winning. But any time I say this is only conscious commentators who digest this. I use to challenge Mai Fatty because someone aiming to be president went into self imposes exile. Look again how the opposition was divided? Why Bah, Sallah, and Gomez joined and Darboe, Fatty and PPP joined? This opposition is totally not competent and even if given 4 months campaign period they will lose because no trust. They are selfish, greedy, cowards and fragmented for personal gains. Look at how humiliating the results are? Why even their own region they failed to win? The opposition leaders have no regard for members because I heard people who cross carpeted during the campaign that the opposition doesn’t care about them. Why this campaign I have not come across Femi Peter,s voice? The Diaspora media is full of angry people that their support to the opposition is doing more harm than good.

Bajaw calls it a "CATASTROPHIC MISTAKE"
I agree with you Mr.Bajaw.These opposition leaders are all dictators. They dictate who and how their parties are run. They will never amount to anything unless and until they start listening to their party militants. Everyone of them is just interested in LEADING and nothing else.Mr Darboe has exhausted all his chances and it is now time for him to let another STAR sign from his party. He can still play very important roles while sitting at the back seat. Hamat and Halifa need to reconcile with the U.D.P and learn from their mistakes.

Here we are fellows; we all have been citing into this day, when we all foretold the concluded outcome. But any of us can do the maths to know the figures advanced here as GENUINE "Gambians registered voter" are quite FRAUDULENT to say the least. This will surely keep Mr Carayol in his post-in-servitude serving the interest of ONE man at expense of State? But the blame also partly lies with our selfish opposition who instead of yeilding to our calls for unity, surprisingly this time around SEEM to habour ethnic/tribal agendas with introvertic-selfish interests at the expense of GENUINE rescue of the sufferings of the innocent peasant Gambian populace. May Allah help us to see the light & do the right thing to redress this catastrophic mistake, SOONER; AMEEN.
