Gambia’s 'Kora king' wants FESMAN held every 2 years

JalibaGambia’s famous king of “Kora” (a 21-string-traditional-musical instrument), Jaliba Kuyateh, has called for the holding of the World Festival of Black Arts (FESMAN) every two years rather than wait for decades, PANA reported from here Monday.Jaliba
Mr. Kuyateh made the proposal during an interview with PANA in Dakar, Senegal, at the just-concluded third edition of FESMAN, which ran from 10 to 31 December.
“Yes, FESMAN is very crucial in helping Africa to integrate. So therefore, it should be organized every two years; moving from one African country to the other,” he emphasized.
That way, he said, the fine ideas, spirit and good collaboration coming out of the grand cultural event would not fade away between FESMAN’s intervals.
“This third edition was an opportunity for many people to meet and collaborate. Many artists have approached me and I received them with open arms,” he added.
On the history of Kora, Kuyateh said that going by Mandinka folklore, it originated from Senegambia region (Gambia and Senegal) and he is the sixth person to be crowned “King of Kora”.
“In every generation, one Kora player emerges on the thrown and today, I am the sixth person to be ordained,” he said.

Jaliba you are one of those people who help keep Jammeh in power by falsely praise singing him.

I agree totally with JOHE, a good festival with interesting music from the region could bring a lot of new visitors to The Gambia, but stop politicizing these events and please not in Kanilai!!!

I would support any festival that does not include the kind of excesses we see in the Kanilai Festival

Any festival that does not include Yaya Jammeh prancing around in his white Kaftan and politicizing the whole event.

King of Kora is no mean achievement and Jaliba thoroughly deserves it.

His music, for those who know the mandingka language,is not just entertaining,bu t also ( now & again ) carries important messages for different people.

Keep up the good work Jaliba.
