Gambia's Justice Minister denies human rights violations
Thursday, 13 May 2010 08:07
Blames bad press for country's poor imageBy Abdoulie John
The Gambian Justice Minister, Edward Gomez, has challenged aspects of recommendations regarding his country’s human rights records, calling them a misrepresentation of the reality on the ground.
The minister made a spectacle as he strongly put forward his opposition to the recommendations highlighted in the NGOs statement forwarded to the 47th Ordinary Session of the African Commission for Human and Peoples’ Rights (ACHPR), which commenced Wednesday 12th May.
“Here in The Gambia we respect human rights,” the Minister stated. He argued that the way Gambia was portrayed in the NGOs report was far from reflecting the true reality. He said those were based on arguments spearheaded by some journalists whom he accused of feeling proud in vilifying their own country.
He cautioned the gathering to be very prudent in dealing with what he described as wrong opinion spread through some of these media outlets.
Mr Gomez impliedly blamed human rights organizations for wrongly fallen in for information based on “sensational and fabricated” reporting.
“On many occasions sensational and fabricated stories have received a resounding and favorable echo from human rights institutions. I challenge anyone to prove that Gambia is not respecting human rights. My office is open.”
With this strong but not unexpected denial, Minister Edward Gomez left participants flabbergasted and anesthetized. The coming days, however, will certainly provide an opportunity for those who want to challenge him to come out with strong arguments…about Gambia's human rights records. It most not be forgotten though that already there are outstanding issues that certainly need not wait for these coming days: the call already made by rights organizations for the release of Journalist Chief Ebrima Manneh and investigations into the coldblooded murder of veteran journalist Deyda Hydara.

This might seem like a lousy attempt at poetry but to me it seems like a good description of the men and women we have seen grovel and snivel at Jammeh's feet to get or keep their positions. From FJC (Fatoumata Jahoumpa Ceesay) to the latest batch of TEMPORARY WORKERS who stand in defense of the King, this conveyor belt of jesters is inexhaustible!
