Gambia's Justice Minister denies human rights violations

Lawyer_Edu_GomezBlames bad press for country's poor image
By Abdoulie John

The Gambian Justice Minister, Edward Gomez, has challenged aspects of recommendations regarding his country’s human rights records, calling them a misrepresentation of the reality on the ground.Lawyer_Edu_Gomez
The minister made a spectacle as he strongly put forward his opposition to the recommendations highlighted in the NGOs statement forwarded to the 47th Ordinary Session of the African Commission for Human and Peoples’ Rights (ACHPR), which commenced Wednesday 12th May.
“Here in The Gambia we respect human rights,” the Minister stated. He argued that the way Gambia was portrayed in the NGOs report was far from reflecting the true reality. He said those were based on arguments spearheaded by some journalists whom he accused of feeling proud in vilifying their own country.
He cautioned the gathering to be very prudent in dealing with what he described as wrong opinion spread through some of these media outlets.
Mr Gomez impliedly blamed human rights organizations for wrongly fallen in for information based on “sensational and fabricated” reporting.
“On many occasions sensational and fabricated stories have received a resounding and favorable echo from human rights institutions. I challenge anyone to prove that Gambia is not respecting human rights. My office is open.”
With this strong but not unexpected denial, Minister Edward Gomez left participants flabbergasted and anesthetized. The coming days, however, will certainly provide an opportunity for those who want to challenge him to come out with strong arguments…about Gambia's human rights records. It most not be forgotten though that already there are outstanding issues that certainly need not wait for these coming days: the call already made by rights organizations for the release of Journalist Chief Ebrima Manneh and investigations into the coldblooded murder of veteran journalist Deyda Hydara.

If anyone think Minister Gomez is as stupid and ignorant as he/she is,must be living in COMMA.Your type of human rights that you are campaigning for, your can put them in your own pockets. Anyone who violates the rights of Gambians, your rights will not only be violated BUT YOUR RIGHTS WILL BE SEIZE COMPLETELY and we will see who will come to your rescue. The Gambia is ours and we have a rich culture that has the highest human rights and any imported human rights will be thrown in MILE 2 and the rest into ATLANTIC OCEAN and not in our clean Gambian society.FULL STOP!!

There was once a policeman who turned into a lawyer. His knowledge grew lesser and lesser. It at last grew so small, he knew nothing at all. And now, he is a JUSTICE MINISTER in THE GAMBIA. Whenever you eliminate the inedible, whatever remains, however inpalatable, must be food! There is no fool like an old fool as nobody can beat experience.

I can't help being so pissed with the likes of this man.Maybe if you had attended the funerals of those 6 old men and women who died from drinking some toxic concoction from witch doctors you would have been able to gauge the depth of utter lunacy that is sweeping our country.
They died because our paranoid and bloodthirsty psycho of a president is flaunting the the constitutional guarantees that should protect us the citizens of Gambia.Bloody sellouts!

No matter what, some people due to selfish gains like yaya himself will fall so low to discard their pride to defend yaya jammeh's murderous tendency image which will inevitably engulf our state in strife if not stopped. And in their attempts, they refer to yaya & his despicable barbarism holistically as Gambia's records. Hence this is what they, including yaya himself, believe that Gambia is yaya’s & can choose to do whatever & get away with. Truth is, yaya himself, his collaborators & supporters are ALL living on 'borrowed times'.

I used to like Edu the feisty lawyer on the radio who told Gambians to stand up for their rights and not let the police push us around. He used to tell people to start taking badge numbers and file complains to with the authorities. Is this the same Edu? I really hope so cuz we do need officials with the balls to stand up and say enough is enough!

Opening Mile 2 to the International Red Cross can be a good start.

Minister Gomez, stand firm like a mountain and defend The Gambia at all cost as that is why you are in this office. Do not allow babylonians to change or deceive us.The Gambia first and if anyone don`t like that can go to planet PLUTO and live there if there will be any place for them.

They are mostly middle-aged,not very successful in their lives, some with a wife or two to cope with not to mention an ego the size of Jupiter. They feel too old for the competitive existence in Western countries but still somehow want to find their "pot of gold" at home. The allure of power and prestige is as irresistible to them as the flame is to a moth. When kicked away from the Big Banquet table, they still somehow manage to hover in the background in the hope of catching the Kings attention and being recalled to the banquet.

This might seem like a lousy attempt at poetry but to me it seems like a good description of the men and women we have seen grovel and snivel at Jammeh's feet to get or keep their positions. From FJC (Fatoumata Jahoumpa Ceesay) to the latest batch of TEMPORARY WORKERS who stand in defense of the King, this conveyor belt of jesters is inexhaustible!
