Gambia’s forest policy nominated for international award

JollofNews – Gambia is one of 16 countries nominated for the Policy Award for Visionary Forest Policies.
The country’s Community Forestry Management initiative of 1995 earned it a placed among 19 forest policies from the 16 countries nominated worldwide for the international award.
With the central theme: ‘Forests for People’, this year (2011) has been declared the International Year of Forests by the United Nations. It aims at raising consciousness of the multiple values of forests and promote greater awareness of success stories and challenges which many of the world’s forests and the
people who depend on them face.Other nominations include policies from Rwanda, Bhutan, Brazil, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Finland, Guatemala, India, Indonesia, Nepal, Norway, Switzerland, Turkey, the United States of America and Vietnam.
The Future Policy Award is granted by The World Future Council, an international policy research organization that provides decision makers with effective policy solutions.
The nominations were received from international organizations, amongst them members of the Collaborative Partnership on Forests (CPF) such as the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (SCBD), the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) as well as other organizations such as Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ).
Up to three winning policies will be announced on 21 September 2011 at the United Nations Headquarters in New York. Winners will represent the most inspiring, innovative and influential forest policies which contribute to the management, conservation and sustainable development of all types of forests for the benefit of current and future generations.
