Gambia’s Anti-narcotics agency counters AFP drug seizure report
Thursday, 12 August 2010 21:08
The National Drug Enforcement Agency (NDEA) has dismissed reports by the French News Agency (AFP) suggesting the country’s police seized over 13 kg of cocaine on Tuesday.
The AFP, Wednesday, said the drug squad of the Gambian police arrested eleven (11) people in a drug bust that led to the seizure of 13.5 kilograms (six pounds) of cocaine in the coastal settlement of Sanyang.

“I did not speak to any AFP correspondent. I don’t know how they were able to get that information. They totally got it wrong!” Abdoulie Ceesay, NDEA’s Public Relation Officer, told Jollof News.
Setting the record straight, Ceesay acknowledged that two raids were conducted consecutively on August 5 and 6, and that “the first raid on the Red Rock Bar and Restaurant, which is located in Sanyang Village (some 25 kilometers from Banjul), led to the arrest of four Spanish nationals, namely Alex Guillen, Raul Vincente, Planas Clara and Margarita Roger.” He added that the two “were caught with two big stones of hashish and six parcels of cannabis.”
The second raid, according to Ceesay, was made on the following day in the same village. “We got a tip-off that led us to a compound where three Nigerians lived. And upon their arrival, the officers conducted a search which led to the seizure of one parcel of suspected cocaine. They are still in custody, pending further investigation,” he said.
Concerning the quantity of the drug seized, the NDEA spokesperson emphasized that it had not been ascertained.
In any case, this latest arrests linked with drugs came barely two months after 2 tons of cocaine were uncovered by anti-narcotics officers, a discovery that confirmed Gambia’s place in the increasingly contending issue of drug problems in the sub region.
