Gambians celebrate Black Stars’ victory
Sunday, 13 June 2010 22:35
Ghanaians resident in The Gambia as well as many football fans in Serekunda, about 12 kilometres from Banjul, the capital
on Sunday afternoon celebrated the Ghana Black Stars historic victory over Serbia in the ongoing World Cup tournament in South Africa.Ghana’s match with Serbia brought traffic to a virtual standstill in the Greater Banjul Area as most drivers and commuters were busy watching
the game. The jubilant fans took to the streets shortly after the central referee blew the final whistle of the game. The youths who were thirsty for an African victory, sang songs, danced and waved Ghanaian flags as they toured the streets of Serekunda and other major settlements.
Surprisingly, the elderly, most of whom are assumed to know little or nothing about football, were also seen clapping and dancing. They described the Black Stars’ victory as a positive move in Africa’s campaign to win the World Cup.
Ghana’s victory came barely an hour after two prominent local coaches-cum-football analysts, Ebou Faye and Amat Cham bemoaned the performance of the African teams over the state-owned Gambia Radio and Television Services.
