Monday, 04 October 2010 20:20
By Kemo ChamGambian Foreign Minister Dr Momodou Tangara is in Turkey as part of his latest leg of world tour selling Gambia abroad to its development partners.
On Monday, Dr Tangara used a joint press conference in Ankara with Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu, where he conveyed a message
to Turkish President Abdullah Gul as the special representative of Gambian President Yahya Jammeh, Turkish newspaper, World Bulletin, reported. While highlighting his government’s development achievement, Tangara extended appreciation to Turkey for its support to the country, particularly for the training of Gambian security forces. He said the Gambian government had taken many steps towards improving the lives of its citizens since the country gained independence and cited education of young girls being offered free of charge, as well as a very cheap health services.
Dr Tangara then extended invitations to Turkish businessmen to invest in Gambia.
Gambia opened its embassy in Turkey in June. That, according to Davutoglu, “is the first embassy that was opened following Turkey's Africa initiative.” He added that Turkey also plans to reciprocate the Gambian gesture by opening an embassy in the country “in the future."
Delving on the two countries’ long standing relations, Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu said political relations were improving well, and noted that the two countries extended support to each other.

"Particularly, within the scope of Jammeh's message to Gul, training of Gambian security forces on combat against human and drug trafficking in Gambia which is used as transit route between Latin America and Europe, is on the agenda. This country also needs technical assistance. Foreign ministries of the two countries also plan to train young diplomats. We will also extend support for education of Gambian students in Turkey," Davutoglu said. The Turkish Foreign Minister however expressed dissatisfaction over the level of economic relations between the two countries and promised that Turkish businessmen would launch joint works to make more investments in Gambia. He then said the two countries would also continue to carry out joint works in international forums.
