Human_right_picBy Abdoulie John
The NGOs Forum, one of the most important conclaves that regularly precede the Ordinary Sessions of the African Commission on Human and People’s Rights (ACHPR), is scheduled for next Saturday, here in Banjul.
In a two-page dispatch sent to Jollof News, the African Centre for Democracy and Human Rights Studies (ACDHRS) indicates that The GambiaHuman_right_pic will once again host the Forum on the Participation of NGOs in the 47th Ordinary Session of the ACHPR and the 21st African Human Rights Book Fair.
“The event which will attract over one hundred human rights activists from Africa and beyond will last from 8th -10th May, 2010, and it is scheduled for the Kairaba Beach Hotel,’’ the statement read. It added, ‘‘The objective of the Forum which will precede the 47th Ordinary Session of the African Commission, also to be held in Gambia from 12th-26th May, 2010, is to foster cooperation among and between NGOs as well as with the African Commission, with the aim of promoting and protecting human rights in Africa.”
According to the release, the first theme on Overview of Human Rights in Africa will examine the present situation of human rights on the continent as well as identify strategies in addressing emerging issues.
Additionally, there will be panel discussions and presentations on the following: 10th anniversary of the UN Resolution 1325, the AU Protocol on Women’s Rights in Africa, Climate Change and Human Rights and development of  a human rights strategy for Africa.
The second theme of the confab, the release notes, will involve deliberations by NGOs, and it will center on “Special Interest Groups”, focusing on, amongst other issues relating to Africa, the Situation of Refugees and Internally Displaced Persons, the Situations of Women’s Rights, Prison Conditions, Rights of Children, and the Death Penalty.
The final theme will be “on Networking for Human Rights which will look at updates on the Human Rights Council as well as the importance of Human Rights documentation.”
This three-day forum, will culminate into production of resolutions and recommendations that will be forwarded to the ACHPR during the 47th Ordinary Session, was supposed to take place in Tunisia, an emblematic country for the violation of human rights.
The release however appeared muted on the reasons that prompted the two African Human Rights bodies to make a U-turn.
