Gambia threatens prosecution for dalasi refusal

Gambian_notesBy Augustine Jatta
The Gambia government has stepped up its campaign against the persistent and illegal practice of refusal of Gambian currencies by some errant business people within the country, a practice that goes back to the mid 90s. In a statement issued last Saturday,Gambian_notes the office of the Gambian president ordered the country’s National Intelligence Agency (NIA) and the Gambia Police Force (GPF) to ‘‘arrest and prosecute anyone who refuses to transact business in the Gambian currency, the dalasi.’’ The statement referred specifically to landlords and businessmen as responsible for the acts, advising that anyone who does not want to do business in the local currency might as well leave the country. The cooperation of the general public, according to the statement, is being solicited, urging them to report anyone who refuses to transact business in the local currency. ‘‘The NIA and police have also been ordered to conduct a nationwide search and arrest of anyone involved in illegal currency trade,’’ the release went on. Refusal of the Gambian dalasi has been a practice widely blamed on foreign traders, but many people here believe it was stirred up by greedy Gambian landlords, including government officials, who take advantage of foreigners who would pay for rent in US dollars. It changed entirely the way tenancy operates in the country, largely at the disadvantage of thGambian_Coinse majority poor Gambians who have resigned to putting up with low standard housing.  As it appears now, the trend has trickled down to the other sectors of the business communities, like corner side shops manned by mainly immigrants who would decide by themselves what denomination to accept. The result is that the 50b, for instance, has virtually become extinct. It could be recalled that just a week or so ago, the head of the country’s police warned against this practice of traders turning down certain denominations of the currency. It is now left to be seen whether the big men involved in the housing business will abide by the rules.

It is not wright for any landlord to ask for rent in foreign currencies only. The Dalasi is the legal local tender which is paramount to any currency in Gambia. They can ask for payments in foreign currencies and or rent value in Dalasi. This comes about because our ailing-economy is (dying) getting worst. The foreign exchange rate to Dalasi has been 'pegged' restricted to a range (D40-D45), this is why those who don't know, assumed the Dalasi's strenght but cann't understand its weak purchse-power. The pegging was done for two reason; to pretend Yaya Jammeh's hopeless Government is performing, and that Yaya himself is engaged in money-laundering-foreign exchange business. Thus fleeching off those sending money to Gambia from abroad. However, resent developments are just a start for things yet to come for the broken-economy and undoubtedly the Gambian people. May Allah bless Gambia. Amen

If it comes to governing the state you must take that very very seriously with the populations future at hand, because it requires knowledge with mounting amount of skills, so, now If it comes to the concern of the value of our currency those particular leadership must accept and bear any huge responsibility and failure it may take. They allways look for a blame to put on someone whether to the white people or to the citizens.

As for me I think we should not be emotional, one should be rational in approaching such problems. The landlords build their houses of-course they incur cost thus need to recover their expense. But if the local currency is depreciating drastically, this shows the incapability of the Government to control at the helm of issues. the government should come up with a proper mechanism like we've seen in other countries.
