Gambia thrashed 3-0 In Rwanda
Sunday, 09 January 2011 15:49
Gamsports - Congo blasted three goals in a scintillating match that confined Gambia to the bottom
of the pack in group B, and tasked the holders to win their two remaining matches or quit the tourney at the group stages.
In their worst start ever to any tourney, Gambia’s hope of a successful title defense got steeped in doubt in Gisenyi after the Baby Scorpions crashed to a two goal downing within five minutes against a strong and determined Congolese side. A goal keeping howler by Baka Cessay was punished with a free kick for Congo which was wisely drilled into the net in the sixth minute .
The Gambians barely digested that initial shock when, Congo mounted another fierce attack with No 10 unleashing a cross from the right flank, which the Gambian defense in a desperate attempt to clear only helped to advanced the course of the ball, to perfectly place it on the path of the advancing Steve Epako who finished it coolly Congo’s goal second goal..
It was the crucial alert that the champions needed to accelerate their game and henceforth displayed better play. Powered by Captain Buba Jallow, Hamza Jallow Demba Janneh, the Gambians caused constant havoc in the Congolese half but were unlucky to find the net. The champions ended the first half strong with only regrets over the early defensive frails and woeful backline errors to brood over in the dressing room.
But any hope of a Gambian revival was swiftly dashed again with an early goal by the Congolese.
A flurry of changes followed in a bid to fires up the team, but this was one night the champions would love to forget. The match ended leaving the Baby Scorpions in the most precarious state ever in their history in this competition, with the horrendous amount of goals taken requiring a massive offensive goal poaching by the Scorpions when they meet Mali and Ivory Coast, if they hope to advance.
