Gambia: Red Cross assists over 400 Senegalese refugees

GRSICRC – More than 400 Senegalese refugees in Gambia will receive three-month food rations, sleeping mats, clothing, soap and hygiene kits from the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and the Gambia Red Cross Society over the coming days.
The southern Senegalese region of Casamance has witnessed new rounds of clashes between the Senegalese armed forces and armed groups since lateGRS December 2010. Hundreds of people have fled their homes, seeking refuge with host families across the border in Gambia and swelling the ranks of some 6,000 Senegalese refugees already present in the neighbouring country.
"The people fled without any belongings," said Jean-Luc Metzker, head of the ICRC mission in Gambia. "Food stocks are running out, so the Red Cross decided to provide them with emergency aid."
Through its newly opened mission in Banjul, the ICRC will continue to assess the situation of these refugees and of any others who may arrive in the country. The ICRC is working in close cooperation with the Gambian Red Cross and coordinating its actions with the Gambian authorities and other humanitarian agencies.

“The people of casamance who are genuinely seeking refuge in The Gambia should be given all the help they need. Afterall, they are our neighbours and possibly, our relatives, becau se we are so closely related

This part of your quotation, which you attribute to Asta,is actually from me & got nothing to do with discrimination between nothern & southern Senegal.

Just for clarification. Thanks (Baks)

I don’t understand your ridiculous analysis of our sister country Senegal? If I understand, You think we the majority of Gambians should help refugees from south of Senegal into our society and see people in the north of Senegal as invaders. .To help is humane but I believe it is because of people like you that made former leader Abdou diouf to turn his back on Jawara when he could have rescue Gambia from 17 years of brutality and mute society in a day.. This casamance tribal conflict is the main reason for the current state of Bissau. It now imported to Gambia by people like you and Jammeh on basis of close relatives or APRC vote rigging.

I thought you looking for a debate but have to use tribe that is out-dated for me to mention it again. Is only the disgruntled that lack adequate knowledge on the subject matter will base it on something to find support but will any cyber support do for you? Is too early to start the fight now since the Balangba day is just weeks and you can show up to slaughter all jolas from foni to cassamance for failures of Jammeh and your troubles are over.

Senegalese (from north senegal)taking over the trade industry,

You people are so wicked and ungambian. You think Senegalese are the same as Nigerian and Ghanaians for Gambia? We are one people. Do you think they will categorise Gambians with Nigerians or Ghanaians? Now you are dividing Senegal between north and south when we were one people before partition of Africa. How did you come about your geographical division of Senegal? Maybe you are not one with Senegal but the majority in Gambia knows we are one people and share the same languages, food, grandparents and traditions... Did you see those "SENEGALESE from THE NORTH" voting and taken Gambians passports? Do they join our security service to protect Jammeh? Do they do implant divisions on their Gambians relatives? These are very important issue for our security and peace maybe not for you for whatever reasons.

With all due respect, I disagree with your comments. What percentage of the Gambian population is Jola? I am yet to read comments about Nigerians corrupting our society on a daily basis, Crime is gone way up. Senegalese (from north senegal)taking over the trade industry, Ghanians taking over our school system and the list goes on. All of a sudden it is a problem when it comes to the Jola tribe. If Yaya is an idiot and using tribe as a weapon, why do we have to do the same thing. The jola, wollof, Manjago, fula are all human beings created from the same Almighty and that's what matters to me nothing else.
Please lets move on to more important issues than this. Thank you

You stated that is because Jammeh is corrupt and I believe that's why tourists from Egypt and UN Staff from Ivory Coast choose Gambia to bribe him. What a laughing statement..

I said
"Tourists choose Gambia as a second alternative to Egypt since it is the only decent sector left by Jawara and not yet dismantle by Jammeh."
Since Jammeh was in standing as guard in bakau depot we always have visitors because of our hospitality sector and people kindness. This sector is still there and the people still friendly to attract tourists and visitors since its outside his control in economic terms. This is what attracts them and not the hummers,Army or kanilai zoo, refuge land or the derrimocracy . Don’t waste my time if you arent sharp enough to understand this. You are a sneaky tribalist and you can’t hide that? Gambia matters and not your petty border home town where the MDFC congregate to help Jammeh power and terrorise Senegalese people.

Why does it have to be base on tribal grounds and not on humanitarian grounds.

Asta.Everything in casamance conflicts and Gunea bissau have to do with jola tribe. The fight is based on tribalism, they sanctuary now in Gambia, refugees predominantly from one tribe, voting population has increased on igneous tribe in that area, refugees are corruptly integrated in our society on tribal lines, issued with ID,passport, vot es to participate on tribal lines, influx in the GNA and security service on tribal lines.Gambia security service comprised of 60% of one tribe JOLA who are

If my first comment is what makes me a jola let it be so but traditional am a son of a jola and mandinka of which my father is a mandinka. But am proud to belong to any tribe as long as am an African. You calling me a fool and is unfortunate that I dont fool people but say what I will do or not. What should I benefit of been a Jola that when one comment in support of government you are a Jola? You stated that is because Jammeh is corrupt and I believe that's why tourists from Egypt and UN Staff from Ivory Coast choose Gambia to bribe him. What a laughing statement. You are desperately speaking your feelings that is up to the readers to judge. Which area of my comment (2) is tribal? I mentioned things that have happened or happening in the Gambia that is label by people like you a Police State and here you conclude am a Jola. What a good fourtune teller you are and God knows who are the real tribelists in this forum.

I am so disappointed with some of your comments. Why does it have to be base on tribal grounds and not on humanitarian grounds. We as immigrants should be the last people to make comments like these. Does it matter where they seek refuge? We are where we are today because of certain reasons. Why didn't we go to Senegal or Guinea. Stop the nonsense
