Gambia Public Meeting in Edinburg

Press ReleaseScottish Campaign for Human Rights in Gambia a civil society group that advocates for the enforcement of Human Rights in the Gambia in collaboration with Peace and Justice Centre Edingburg,National Union of Journalist,and Amnesty International will hold a public meeting on Thursday December 16th at 8pm Peace and Justice Centre conference room.

The meeting will raise awareness of the increasingly critical human rights situation in The Gambia and also call on the Scottish and UK Governments to excert international pressure on the Gambia government in defence of human rights.The meeting will also concide with the 5th anniversary of the brutal assasination of a prominent Gambia journalist Deyda Hyadara who was gun down on December 16th 2004 and government have refused to investigate the killing.
The Scottish Campaign for Human Rights in Gambia was formed by Gambians living in Scotland , Scottish, Human Rights organisations, Media, and Civil Society Organisations. . The group include Amnesty International, NUJ, Amnesty International Ayrshire Branch, Scottish Youth Parliament, Scottish Palestinian Solidarity Group, Scottish Catholic Media office, UNA Edinburgh, Amnesty International Glasgow Local News Glasgow.The campaign is also supported by politicians from different parties.
BACKROUND
Scottish Campaign for Human Rights in Gambia was set up in response to the increasing number of political killings and human rights abuses taking place in The Gambia.Between 1994 to 2008 more than 300 people have died or dissappered at the hands of the Gambia government headed by a former military officer Yahya Jammeh.The victms include journalist,political activists,students,civil servants,trade unionists and others who have been active in fighting for social justice and civil liberty in Gambia.
Gambia is currently among the most dangerous places in the world for journalists.Amnesty International produce a special report "Gambia Fear Rule"in 2008 which documents various human rights abuses and killings in Gambia.
