Gambia Police Burst Licence Scam
Thursday, 02 June 2011 23:03
(Jollofnews) - The arrest and subsequent detention of some Gambian police officers, including ASP Lamin King Colley, over alleged driving licence scam
has been in the grapevine, forcing our intrepid correspondent to put his sources at work. Mr. Colley - an influential sports executive in Brikama - is the second Vice President of Gambia Football Association. “King Colley and a good number of accomplices have been arrested for driving license scam,” a trusted source who begged for cover confirmed to Jollofnews.

The scam followed series of raids, in which the police burst criminal networks bent on producing fake driving licence across the country. Our source said members of the network have reportedly sold these documents to unqualified drivers, a dangerous practice that undoubtedly catapulted accidents in the country.
The Gambia Police Force finalized the introduction of biometric licence for all categories of drivers in January last year. All previous cards expired on January 17, 2010. The bursting of ASP Colley and co contradicted the police department’s touted campaign that “we are no more issuing licence to anybody without appearing before us.” These words were attributed to the former police mouthpiece, Superintendent Sulayman Secka. He said security features of the biometric card makes it difficult to be faked by criminals.

When civil/public servants want to live a lifestyle not commensurate with their earnings, corrup tion & abuse of office becomes one way of achieving this.
And,unfortunate ly,the current political leadership, star ting with the president, are not leading by example.
So whilst the police must be commended, socie ty needs to do more to combat corruption & flamboyance, wit h ill gotten wealth.
The National Assembly,on the other hand, should be holding the administration accountable to the people, rather than be party to the endless ceremonies marking the donation of this or that gift by Yaya Jammeh.
