Gambia observes International Disaster Reduction Day

PANA, Dakar - Gambia's National Disaster Management Agency (NDMA) on Wednesday
spearheaded a chain of activities, including a march past, to mark the 'International Disaster Reduction Day', geared towards raising awareness on how to tackle natural calamities, PANA reported from here.UN Security Council has set aside the second Wednesday of October each year as the 'International Day for Natural Disaster Reduction,' since 1989.
A statement from Gambia's disaster agency disclosed that the country had lined up activities, including public speeches from Vice-President Isatou Njie-Saidy, a drama sketch by youth groups, among other things.
The key message for this year's celebration revolves around - 'Making cities resilient; my city getting ready'.
The main objectives of the programmes are geared towards getting Gambians find ways of making cities resilient to disasters as part of creating sustainable urban communities.
