"Gambia must end this assault on human rights"
Sunday, 18 July 2010 12:31
A massive demonstration has been set to coincide with celebrations marking the 16th anniversary of the July 22nd military coup that brought former Lt. Yahya Jammeh to power.

A statement released by Amnesty International cites arbitrary arrests, unfair trials, and torture as focus for the July 22 demonstrations, when “people from across the world are joining together to take action to call on the Gambian government to uphold its people’s basic rights and freedoms.”
Accordingly, the demonstrators will be calling for the “immediate and unconditional” release of journalist Chief Ebrima Manneh, detained since 2006, Edwin Nebolisa Nwakaeme, a Nigerian human rights activist, and Femi Peters, a leading Gambian opposition politician, “three prisoners of conscience detained solely for peacefully exercising their basic human rights.”
“The day of action coincides with the national Gambian holiday called ‘Freedom Day’, celebrating when President Yahya Jammeh came into power in 1994. However, there is no freedom in the Gambia. Instead, it has a massive record of human rights violations,” the statement by the global rights watchdog states.

It adds that human rights violations are perpetrated by the fiercely criticized National Intelligence Agency (NIA), the army and police “against real and perceived opponents of the government on a routine basis.” “Once people are in custody of the government, they are susceptible to a whole range of human rights violations including unlawful detention, torture while in detention, unfair trials, enforced disappearance and extrajudicial killings,” the statement reads.
Amnesty International is calling on people the world over to join the Global Day of Action!
“Together we can show the government of Gambia that the world will not stand idly by in the face of human rights abuses,” it said.
And it concludes: “The Gambia must end this assault on human rights.”
