Gambia is paying lip service to human rights protection
Thursday, 21 October 2010 11:51

Mr. Sy made the statement at a press conference, organized by the Coalition for Human Rights in The Gambia, in collaboration with the regional and international human rights organizations here.
He said although the Gambia is the headquarters of the Pan African rights body, the African Commission on Human and People's Rights (ACHPR), as well as other continental rights groups but still, massive rights violations go on unabated.
'Gambia is a paradox,' he decried, while calling on President Yahya Jammeh's government to immediately release two detained gender activists, Dr. Isatou Touray, Executive Director, and Amie Bojang Sissoho, Programme Coordinator of Gambia Committee for Traditional Practices (GAMCOTRAP).
The press conference was organized in collaboration with rights groups such as: Organisation Nationale des Droits de l'Homme (ONDH), International Federation of Journalists (IFJ), Rencontre Africaine pour la Défense Des Droits de l'Homme (RADDHO), West African Journalists Association (WAJA) and Amnesty International, Section Senegal.

Jollofnews must remain a news paper of all the people.Mr.Cham founded this Jollofnews and owned by all of us and I will NOT agree that no one talks good of President Jammeh on cyber news.So lets think well.
He only wants people to focus on his good deeds, which explains his intolerance to decent. Yet that runs counter to democratic principles.
Maybe what you intend to ask is why is it that no one is talking good online about Jammeh. But the answer is obvious, these online papers have come into being as a result of Jammeh's refusal to allow freedom of expression in Gambia. So these are alternatives to his clampdown on free speech and decent, so are you surprised why he can't hear good about himself here?
But the irony is, here you are defending Jammeh on a forum created by people some of whom are victims of his making. Yet you still wonder why people appeared critical of him...
Again, point to any political leader in gambia who trades on tribalism, even though they do not win.. it is Yahya Jammeh who wins, yet he continues to complain of tribalism. What is it that we are talking about. Is it paranoa or what?
Ous,
The point here is every tribe in Gambia is guilty some how of tribalism. And this is not isolated to Gambia. It is worst in some other countries even in the sub region - take Senegal, for an example closer to home. Isn't that the cause of the current casamance conflict?
I think the calibre of opinion leaders determine effect of tribal feelings. That is what makes Yahya Jammeh dangerous, unlike his political opponents. Truth is that he just feels treatened and can't keep quiet; he is pursuing tribalism by pretending to be the victim, thereby ganering support from the minority base... But you and I know Jammeh can't win elections based on such support. He has support even from the tribes he assault on a daily basis. Or is it the devils that vote for him?
Must all Mandinkas, Wollofs or Fullahs vote for Jammeh before we declare Gambia tribalism free?
I admired your sense of humor, I must admite. But your last comments have made me wonder what is the reason for your obvious show of loyalty to Yahya Jammeh.
Quoting Ous:
Have you ever questioned why would a responsible govt trade in forceful disappearance of its citizens?
Anyway, I will leave you to contemplate that. With regards to the tribal issues. Like I said, we can't have any evidence pointing to Jammeh's opponent doing tribalism, but there are abundant of his evidences pointing to him... Continued above..........
What do you expect me to say when you have all the answers? It was great of you to expose all you know about the political leaders and for me I think God knows it more than you and me who can be a judge and witness to all. Dont you think God is the best judge and witness as all of us these days are bias and defend the one of our choice. But god is not asleep and serve as a witness to everything we discussing here? When I look at jammeh's politics I find it hard to admit that he is tribal. "Yes" he expresses tribal sendiments but who started is where the blame is, but his actions are far from tribal. Lets look at his administration. How many are of his tribe? Jammeh's own relatives and tribe are send to jail, dismissed, disappeared like the sake of Arona Jammeh and Massie Jammeh who are his blood. So when one say Jammeh is tribal, you may be right depending on the side you look at it. But he never mentioned that a tribe will be evacuated or call it migrants.
Thanks and may god be a witness and judge to everything.
The fact that Jammeh's tribe is either 3rd or 4th is what made him position himself as a victim of tribalism from the word go.
You can accuse the other politicians for being selfish and in the case of some corrupt, but that they played the tribal card, no. Jammeh started it. and there are electronic evidences to show this. Go to Youtube; but you can't have anywhere there any of the other politicians talking about tribe, only him.
Does being a Mandika and runing for president by itself make one gulty of tribalism, or does being a fulla and runing for president make you guilty too?
Or if majority Mandikas vote for Lawyer Darboe, for instance, does that make him any tribalist? Well, haven't you seen the same in Foni?
The point is, it is only Yahya Jammeh who is complaining, yet he continues to claim victory. Is he really wining?
