Gambia government confesses receiving Iranian weapons
Friday, 25 February 2011 02:55
- Senegalese Foreign MinisterJollofNews - Gambia has declared it had indeed received weapons from Iran, Senegal’s Foreign Minister Madické Niang revealed in Dakar Thursday, citing his Gambian counterpart, Momodou Tangara.
''My counterpart told me that for its internal security, Gambia had asked Iran in 2005 to equip its security forces, Mr Niang told a press briefing at the end of
the fourth session of the Advisory Commission on the review of the cooperation between Senegal and Gambia, which opened in Dakar on Wednesday. The illegal “secret” weapons deal between President Yahya Jammeh and his now estranged Iranian friends sparked diplomatic row among Iran and Gambia on the one hand, Gambia and Senegal on the other hand and eventually Senegal and Iran.
Senegal fears that given President Yahya Jammeh’s alleged history with its Southern rebels, such weapons could end up in their hands. These fears have in fact been confirm this week when the Senegalese government said it had evidence that the MFDC rebels were in possession of sophisticated (Iranian) arms.
Even after Iran admitted it had a clandestine agreement with the Gambian government, President Jammeh had until now refused to accept responsibility for the Nigeria intercepted cache of weapons.
The Gambian president himself is on recording swearing, through his de factor spokesperson, State House Secretary General and Head of Civil Service Njogu Bah, that those Nigeria intercepted weapons were not for Gambia.
“…If those arms were for The Gambia; let it be clear that there is no power on earth that would have prevented The Gambia from negotiating with the Federal Republic of Nigeria for their release to The Gambia,” Jammeh’s statement read in December. “The real truth and ALLAH is our witness,” the statement added “is that those Arms were addressed to Nigeria and that is why the containers were discharged in the APAPA Port of Lagos.”
But Yahya Jammeh’s private business entity was named on the bill of laden from the unset. And Iran’s Ambassador to Nigeria, early February, attempted to explain Gambia’s (Yahya Jammeh’s) abrupt severing of ties with his country with his disclosure to the Nigerians that the weapons intercepted at the Lagos port were in fact destined for Gambia.
"I informed them formally that this consignment was not for Nigeria. The destination is Gambia," Ambassador Hussein Molla Abdullahi told journalists in a press conference in Abuja, adding that the country (Gambia) was upset that Tehran had disclosed a confidential agreement to Nigeria.
In Dakar on Thursday, Senegalese Foreign Minister Madické Niang recalled this Iranian confession. The Iranians, he said, had since confirmed to have delivered arms to the Gambia. That's what I was told.
“This is a problem that will not be settled by myself, nor by the Prime Minister. It will be the president,'' Niang added.

Meanwhile, this revelation by the Senegalese may have laid to rest doubts about the awkward behavior of the Wade government despite increasing evidence of Gambia government’s complicity in the illegal Iranian arms deal, but for ordinary Gambians, the “secret” nature of the deal, as Iran’s Nigeria envoy indicated, remains a matter of serious concern. After all Gambians have already been assured that the weapons were not meant for the country,a nd that has turned out to be a blatant lie.
The purchase of rocket launchers, grenades and explosives can hardly be merely explained by excuses for internal security reasons, certainly not by the same Gambian government.

I will respect you to call you brother but is unfortunate you can call me a fool but I don’t think this name fits me as this word comes from the word fooling. Those you should call fools are the ones making words with no effort of action but asking others to do it for them. Our comments could be garbage and if you wanted to proof that you would be better than Jammeh you would have respected those you share different views. I expected you to sensitize us by professionally putting your facts not provoking us that if am like you the reply will be nasty. This is why I don’t believe some of you commenting here are for national interest. Just understand that is not possible that we speak the same language and not all will smile at the same time. So if you border with this you just multiplying your problems that are a general concern. You can give us more names if that is the way forward.
I do not know you...but yet you come here online to scribble insults against my family name, my ethics and my political orientation.
Still You !! do not know me.
Then you try to tell me I should desist from speaking freely.
We Brits have freedom of expression.
Something you Gambian's have to come here in secret to enjoy.
Sorry about that..really !
Now you appear to complain about spending 100 dalasis in an internet cafe...with the idea that you didn't get value for money?
Sorry about that. Sir !!! thats real tough on your pocket.
What were you expecting? Green shield stamps and unlimited litary acclaim?
You say you support Mr Jammeh and also claim he knows you and supports you.
Fair enough....
State your case....But try to be civil and respectful to others online.
No offence taken.
With Respect.
