Tuesday, 23 November 2010 20:17
Gamsports - The Gambia has been drawn alongside Liberia, the Sierra Leone U-20, s Nigerian club side Ojoko FC in Group B of the International African youth tournament
which kicks off in Freetown on Saturday. The draw for the competition was made at a glittering ceremony at the Country Lodge in Freetown attended by leading Jamaican Grammy award winning artist Anthony Moses a.k.a. Beenie Man. Didier Drogba’s pair of boots he wore at the 2010 Fifa World Cup were auctioned for US$16 000. A message
of support for the tournament from Drogba while Nigerian comedian Gbenga Adeyinka dived into the pool after the final bid for Drogba’s boots was made and he later told a stunned audience that he did it for the cause of charity as it was important to support FC Johansen, a project that had brought hope to many boys in Sierra Leone. And there was also a moment of silence in remembrance of Johansen’s fallen star player Issa Koroma, popularly known in this West African country as “Madam” who died during a car accident last year and now organizer Isha Johansen announced that this year’s tournament has been named after the departed youngster.
The tournament gets underway with the Sierra Leone U-20 taking on Liberia’s U-20 on Saturday at the national Stadium shortly after the opening ceremony at 19H00. Three matches will be played on Sunday with the Diambars Academy facing FC Johansen in the opening match at 15H00, followed by the match between Gambia’s U-20 against Ojoko FC at 17H00 and the match of the day will undoubtedly be the South African clash against their Ghanaian opponents at 19H00.
Though not much is known about the tourney in Banjul a source close to the GFA confirmed to Gamsports that indeed Gambia will send a team.
