Gambia Day of Action in Stockholm (Sweden)

(JollofNews) - On Friday 22 July 2011 members of HUMRA Human Rights for All had a successful lobbying
meeting with staff of Swedish Foreign Ministry West Africa desk. This year's meeting tabled issues concerning the current adverse human rights situation of Gambia.Mr. Momodou Lamin Sarho a Gambian resident in Stockholm told the gathering that the political and
human rights situation in the should not be seen as Gambian issue, hence Sweden is one country that have long existing economic ties with the Gambia particularly in terms of tourism. Mr. Yaya Dampha Coordinator of HUMRA spoke about poor human rights situation in Gambia and Gambian government's lack of respect for the rule of law, unsolved extrajudicial executions, enforced disappearances and lack respect for ECOWAS Community court rulings in the cases of journalists Musa Saidykhan and Ebriima Manneh.
For his part Mr. Staffan Jönssåter of Swedish Foreign Ministry said Sweden is paying greater attention to degraded human rights situation in the Gambia. He said Sweden is aware of the rule of fear in the Gambia and that they had issued statements on the situation and shall continue to observe and take up matters both at National and EU level. He promised a greater collaboration with HUMRA on issues concerning Gambia.
After the lobbying meeting at the Foreign Ministry Mr. Sarho and Dampha used the rest of the day distributing campaign materials on the streets of Stockholm and later stationed in front of the Swedish
Parliamentary building where all the banners were displayed for over an hour. In the evening the group targeted Gambian communities at the mosque and around by areas to sensitise them on the need and importance of their future events.
