Gambia bows out in semis in Freetown
Saturday, 04 December 2010 20:47
Gamsports - The Gambia Under-20 squad lost on penalties in semi-final of the African International Youth tournament, AIYT, in Freetown, Sierra Leone Friday. After leading
opponents Ghana with a 50th minute goal, the Young Scorpions surrendered the lead when Ghana equalised eight minutes before full time. The match was full of strength and long balls, but there was evidence of fatigue on both teams and as the time passed by it was clear that it was going to be a deadlocked encounter. The match went straight to penalty shoot outs and Gambia kicked four and scored only one whilst the Ghanaians kicked three and scored all of them.
Ghana Under-20 coach Orlando Wellington said now that his team were in the final he would make sure that they win the trophy. “We’ll approach the match against Sierra Leone with all seriousness and I’m optimistic that we’ll win,” Coach Wellington said in the post match press conference after their victory over Gambia.
