Gambia arrests 440 in 2010 for drug trafficking

Gambia arrested 440 people of various nationalities in connection with drug trafficking in 2010, statistics released by the
country’s anti-narcotics agency showed Friday.Of the total, 323 cases involved cannabis trafficking with almost 882 kilogrammes.

There were also 19 cases of cocaine smuggling (two tonnes); five cases concerning heroin (52 grammes); six concerning hashish (34 grammes); and six cases involving psychotropic substance control, said agency spokesperson Abdoulie Ceesay.
Ceesay said that the number of young people arrested in connection with cannabis abuse was increasing at an alarming rate.
"Nationalities involved in cannabis sativa included 352 Gambians, 23 Senegalese, three Malians, two Guineans, one Nigerian, two Ivorians, one British, one German, four Spanish and one French national.
"The nationalities involved in cocaine involved one Cameroonian, one Estonian, nine Gambians, one Ghanaian, 14 Bissau Guineans, 14 Nigerians, three Dutch nationals, one Mexican, one Swedish and five Venezuelans," he added.
