Gambia among 9 countries to benefit from multimillion $ projects
Tuesday, 05 October 2010 22:54
The Islamic Development Bank (IDB) on Tuesday announced the approval of $772.3 million for new development projects in nine member countries, including Gambia.
The decision, according to a press statement released Tuesday, was taken at a meeting of IDB's Board of Executive Directors which was chaired by group president Ahmad Mohamed Ali.

Gambia and eight other countries, including Indonesia, Mauritania, Uzbekistan, Bangladesh and Albania, will receive funds for a variety of projects. Five of nine projects approved are considered as mega projects, the statement said.
It added that the IDB board also decided to extend technical assistance in the form of grants to Benin, Chad, Togo, Sudan and countries of the Gulf Cooperation Council.
Non-member countries like Congo, Fiji, India and South Africa will receive finance for health and educational projects, the IDB press release said.
IDB is a long standing development partner of the Gambia, presently sponsoring about 15 ongoing projects across the sectors of education, water and sanitation, infrastructures, health and agriculture. IDB is presently funding the construction of the Westfield-Sukuta Road, which is among major projects by the Gambian government.
The Bank is also presently looking into ways of helping in re-constructions efforts following the devastating floods that hit Gambia recently.
