G/ Bissau ruling party endorses deployment of stabilization force

The ruling African Party for the Independence of Guinea-Bissau (PAIGC), has endorsed the principle of sending a stabilization force to the country, but the sovereign institutions, notably the Parliament, shall approve the idea and the deployment of troops shall be done under the auspices of the United Nations, Guinea Bissau Defense Minister, Aristides Ocante da Silva said on Wednesday. In any case, he said, Guinea-Bissau is awaiting the final reports of the mission sent to Guinea Bissau by the Community of Portuguese-speaking countries (CPLP), the Committee of Ecowas chiefs of staff as well as the declaration of the AU summit in Kampala, Uganda on the situation in Guinea-Bissau.
It remains clear that most of the opposition political parties such as the Social Renewal Party (PRS) are officially against sending troops to Guinea-Bissau.
During a meeting held on 12-13 August, the Committee of Ecowas chiefs of staff had recommended the establishment of a local protection unit designed to ensure the safety of the President, the Prime Minister, the Parliament Speaker, the Attorney General, the Supreme Court President, as well as poorly-secured personalities.
