From where I stand
Thursday, 11 November 2010 20:37
By PK JarjuRecent newspaper reports that some politicians and paramount chiefs are lobbying for a no -election in the Gambia or whatever they call it should be a cause for concern.
In this 21st century, I cannot believe that there still exist a group of educated Gambians who because of their selfish desire will want to put our hard fought democracy in the bin and crown Yahya Jammeh as king of the Gambia.

This is very insulting, and our national heroes like Edward Francis Small, PS Njie and others must be currently turning in their graves. These illustrious Gambians made so many sacrifices to ensure that we are an independent and sovereign country with a right to vote and remove our representatives through the ballot box.
Our national heroes must be wondering in their graves what the hell is wrong with modern generation Gambians. Our democracy is crumbling right in front of our eyes and a large majority of Gambians do not even care. How sad is that? Ndeysan!
Let me make one thing clear. Democracy is not a western product. Democracy has been in Africa long before colonialism and has helped to keep our people united. Democracy has never been the cause of Africa’s problem. Africa’s problems are caused by brutal, corrupt and selfish dictators who want to stay in power for the rest of their lives.
While I agree with Jammeh that the Gambian constitution is not the Qur’an or Bible, I would like to remind him that our country is not government based on the teaching of these Holy Scriptures but by the constitution, which makes it a sacred national asset. And that is why Jammeh had to swear by the Qur’an before assuming office that he will defend and be faithful to the constitution of the Gambia at all time.
Therefore any attempt to tamper with the constitution to give Jammeh ownership of our county is treasonous. And we need to know that crowning Jammeh as king of the Gambia will not in any way make our country prosper or stable. Rather, it will bring more political instability and retrogression. We Gambians have to wake up from our slumber.
Why do we still continue to have this fathom believe that Jammeh is the only one who can develop our country? Why do we still continue to have fear in our hearts that the Gambia will crumble into bits and pieces without Jammeh? Why do we continue to believe in Jammeh and his regime despite 17 years of broken promises? Why do we continue to vote for Jammeh in every election when we are being so cruelly held to ransom?
Rather than busy themselves campaigning for a no election, our members of the National Assembly should instead clamour for more political freedom, transparency and accountability in government. For we cannot as a country attain any of our development objectives without accountability and respect for political freedoms.
