Four Senegalese Journalists Questioned by Police

walftv(JollofNews) – Dakar-based daily newspaper Walfadjri had four of their journalists questioned today by Senegalese police. It was regarding publication of an 'inflammatory' article titled “Thugs of the Republic” in July 12, 2011 edition of the paper. Managing Editor Abdourahmane Camara and three other reporters Charles Gaïky Diène, Yakhya Massaly and Mohamed Mboyo, were all given “an invitation for questioning” late Tuesday. walftv
Details gathered from reliable sources by Jollofnews indicated that these independent journalists are expected to “provide evidence” substantiating the investigative report they released last Tuesday, centred on President Wade's entourage, and its involvement in criminal activities. The Walfadjri report indicates how 'thugs' such as Farba Senghor, Karim Wade, Awa Ndiaye, Cheikh Tidiane Sy, Aliou Sow, Serigne Mbacké Ndiaye, Alioune Diop, Mouhamadou Lamine Massaly, and the president's bodyguard Lamine Faye have destroyed their credibility and that of the institution they are representing.
“There is nothing wrong in exposing the true nature of these people" insists Managing Editor Camara, expressing confidence in his editorial team, and their ability to undertake investigative reporting. Camara calls it an act of intimidation. In his views, Senegalese authorities through the police, are trying to prevent private media from playing its role of reporting the truth and its job of serving the public, Sidy Lamine Niasse, President of the Walfadjri Media Group explained. At time of going to press there is no indication that the journalists have been free.

Atleast, its the police and not the secret service . They wrote an article making serious allegations. They must proof that what they wrote is not mere slander of the people mentioned. Responsible journalism demands that when you write stories questioning people 's intergrity, you have evidence to back it up. And its the role of the police to demand to see that evidence . That's democracy at work.
