Forum calls for respect for freedom of expression
Thursday, 11 November 2010 21:35
At an NGO's forum on Wednesday in Banjul in preparation for the 48th Ordinary Session of the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights, they called for the repeal of criminal defamation laws.

The resolution read by Mr. Omar Faruk Osmanm of the Federation of African Journalists (FAJ) demanded all necessary measures to ensure that member states complied with their obligations under the African Charter and the Declaration of Principles on the Freedom of Expression in Africa.
It urged member states of the African Union to adopt freedom of information law and repeal all laws and provisions that inhibit free speech.
The resolution called upon member states of the African Union to respect the provisions of their various constitutions with regard to the independence of the judiciary and separation of powers and demanded the release of all journalists and other free expression advocates in detention. They should also make the safety and protection of journalists a priority.
The resolution said African governments must respect the plurality of the print media and allow state broadcasters to operate as true independent public service broadcasters.
It urged member States of the African Union to probe all violent actions against journalists when their armed or security forces may have been involved and urged the African Union and its member states to adopt the proposed resolution on safety and protection of African journalists in the upcoming African Union summit.

Mention dry bones in proverb, old women would take it refers to them; the above calls undoubtedly are relevant in most African countries but couldn’t be more timely/urgent in Gambia. The appalling pathetic treatment of expressers of independent views particularly those of decent in hands of the criminal regime in Kanilai’s despicable, to say the least.
