Former Gambian ambassador to France charged with graft

willy_joof-sA Gambian court on Tuesday charged a former ambassador to France with corruption and theft relating to abuse of power while he was in office.
William John Joof, who is currently the permanent secretary at the foreign ministry, denied all the charges. He was refused bail and remanded into state custody.willy_joof-s
Joof, ambassador to France from 2002 to 2007, is facing nine charges including obtaining goods by false pretences, conspiracy to commit a felony, and abuse of office.
According to the charge sheet, Joof conspired with certain individuals to import goods into Banjul in his name to evade payment of custom duties.
Joof also allegedly received 15,000 euro (19,000 dollars) from a French national in return for a job in the Gambian consular services.
Corruption is rife in the small West African nation, a problem that has prompted President Yahya Jammeh to declare "an all-out war on drugs and corruption".
During the July anniversary of the 1994 bloodless coup in which he seized power, Jammeh denounced the "evil practice" of graft and said there was no place for nepotism, cronyism and tribalism in his government.

Who is next on Jammeh's radar? Until these people learn, jammeh will always used and abused them. Because he knows they very feeble. Please can someone tell the where about of Masaneh Kinteh. Why did he returned back after his Masters degree in the UK? I know it was just a matter of time he was always going to be sacked and will soon be framed for stealing or coup against this Barbaric government.

Who ELSE’s more corrupt than yaya jammeh in Gambia? Yaya’s goods imported, from sugar, rice, cement, vehicles, real flour for bakery & flour-disguised-cocaine, wild animals & all what not, are NEVER accounted for at the ports for customs & exercise payments to Gambian revenue. Not today, neither the Youth Development Enterprise days before; & who engages more in nepotism & tribalism better, if any?? Yaya’s close relatives & people he uses are the only ones selected for the ambassadorial jobs currently; for he’s got NO real friends. These are the people he tries to prey on in attempts to cleanse his FILTY IMAGE. It’s one rule for yaya, another for rest of humanity under him in Gambia.
