FAWEGAM pushes for Math, Science & Technology education for girls

gambian_schl_girlsBy Abdoulie John
50 girls drawn
from Junior Secondary schools across Gambia recently concluded an intensive summer camp training in Maths, and Science and Technology.
What is one of the country’s largest educational summer camps, the five day academic gathering, organized by the Forum for African Womengambian_schl_girls Educationalists – Gambia chapter (FAWEGAM), provided participants the opportunity to explore the subject areas with the rare experience of interacting with students from different horizons.
The educational summer camp also aimed at helping school girls to bridge the gap in performance, vis-à-vis their opposite sex.
One of the challenges of society  is that there are still some people out there who are with the strong belief that women and girls need not to be educated or even occupy some leadership position, said Yadicon Njie-Eribo, FAWEGAM’s coordinator. She told participant at the opening ceremony at the Girls Guide Hall in Kanifing that this general perception cannot continue to prevail, and should be rejected. Their objective, she said, is not to upset the social balance in society between men and women, but to remove the injustice that has compromised the lives of women and girls for many generations.
On a more optimistic tone, the FAWEGAM coordinator envisaged that after ten years, this scheme will constitute the basis for the actualization that the campers will become engineers and scientists so that their job would have been done.
Mrs Njie-Eribo however sought to remind participants of the potential pitfalls regarding the work of FAWEGAM in the development of women and girls and expressed appreciation to all those who supported her organization in making the camp a success.
Jenieri B. Sagnia, Unicef Education specialist, expressed pride on behalf of the organization for associating with the project, noting that the activity is important towards the drive to improving quality education especially on math and science for girls.
“Our presence here is to give testimony to the fact that math and science are extremely critical subjects that have transformed and continue to transform the world and improve the quality of our lives”, he remarked.
He highlighted Unicef’s core commitments to education centered on the claim that all children must realize their right to basic education of good quality and that girls in particular must have full and equal access to basic and secondary education. He noted that to
achieve such laudable objectives, mathematics and science education must necessarily be accessible to all girls without any form of discrimination.
While praising the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education (MoBSE) and FAWEGAM for their rightful initiatives undertaken in efforts to popularize mathematics, science and technology education for girls, the Unicef representative at the ceremony pointed out that advances in scientific research and their application into usable technology have made it possible for more people to eat better, enjoy better health, travel safely and conveniently,
communicate, learn effectively and more importantly live longer lives.
Emily Foon-Sarr, chairperson of FAWEGAM, said the summer camp was designed to accord participants some introduction to maths, science and technology.
She noted that there is a reason for having girls camped together by encouraging them on these subjects, adding that in today’s world without maths, science and technology, people are
nowhere.
Adelaide Sosseh, director of World View, while delivering the vote of thanks, advised FAWEGAM to keep track on the girls to see if they will go in for science subjects and follow on on their performance.
