Farmers’ Platform Denies Aflatoxin presence in Gambian peanuts
Tuesday, 01 March 2011 20:52
Jollofnews - The President of the National Farmers’ Platform of Gambia, Mr. Musa Jawneh, has denied that Gambian pea
(ground) nuts have aflatoxin content, arguing that they are of good quality as any others from elsewhere in the sub region. Jawneh made this remark in reaction to reports that Gambian peanuts have been suffering from aflatoxin infection and as such they do not do well in the world markets compared to others from the sub region.

He vehemently denied this and said other nuts being accepted in the world market in the place of Gambian nuts are in the same condition with Gambian nuts. He therefore argued that such should not be the basis for rejecting Gambian nuts from the world market.
The Farmers’ Platform president however admitted that Gambian groundnuts face challenges such as low oil content. This, he explained, is due to the fact that the groundnut variety being cultivated in the country has been around for the past twenty six years. He said the country needed a new variety of groundnut to replace the one which seems to have outlived its qualities.

A major player in the African market said recently to me that The Gambia's groundnut production had declined sharply since 2002 figures.
