Ex-union leader wants justice for slain Gambian editor

Demba_A_Jawo(PANA) - Demba Jawo, former President of the Gambia Press Union (GPU), an umbrella body of independent journalists, has renewed calls for “proper investigations” into the 2004 murder of Deyda Hydara, former managing editor of Banjul-based Point newspaper, PANA reported Wednesday. Mr. Jawo, who is now an editor at the Africa Press Agency, made the call in an exclusive interview with PANA on the occasion of the International Press Freedom Day. He said over six years since the December 2004 cold-blooded murder of Hydara, the Gambian government appeared to be doing very littleDemba_A_Jawo towards ensuring that justice took its course. Jawo charged the Gambian authorities to assume their role by going after the journalist’s killers.
“It is a shame that the government has decided to ignore investigations into Deyda Hydara’s death,” he lamented.
deyda_hydara1Hydara, one of the leading critics of the Gambian government, was gunned down by unknown armed men on the streets of Serra Kunda, as his newspaper marked 13 years of existence.
On government-media relations, the former GPU president observed that it was still the least cordial, even after the recent all-inclusive meeting convened by President Yahya Jammeh and attended by members of the independent media.
According to Jawo, though the move was a positive one, the intentions were quite a different matter.
“It seems President Jammeh had an agenda; during the meeting, he lambasted journalists,” Jawo remarked, adding “nothing has changed on the ground, even after meeting the private press.”

The day will come when we will decorate Deyda , Manneh, Kanyi and all those whose lives were violently ended in our dear country.
It is saddening that The Point has turn out to be another daily observer but we will make things right so that his death will not be in vain._You(Deyda)migh t have been warned but you were on the right side of history and whoever dies for the truth will Live forever.

If there is one person with the credentials to negotiate a better and constructive dialogue with President Jammeh.

It is Mr Demba Jawo.
