Estonia grants Gambia’s request for Hernia surgeons
Tuesday, 21 September 2010 23:20
In response to request by the Gambian Ministry of Health, the three Estonians will travel to The Gambia this October as part of an ‘Operation Hernia Humanitarian Mission,’ an Estonian Foreign Ministry statement said.
Hernia is a condition of protrusion of an organ through the wall of the cavity that contains it. The protrusion occurs depending on the size of the opening. It is said to be more common among babies and toddlers, but it affect people across all ages. Medical experts in the area are very rare on the continent of Africa.
According to the Estonian Foreign Ministry statement, the goal of the Estonia surgeons departing for Gambia is to demonstrate surgeries and create the basis for a surgery rotation to ensure the training of local surgeons.
It added that the mission is being supported by funds from the Foreign Ministry’s budget for development co-operation and humanitarian aid.
“The accessibility of medicine in Africa is extremely low. The population of the African nations together is nearly three times greater than that of the United States, but only 3% of the world’s medical workers work in that part of the world,” Estonian Foreign Minister Paet was quoted as saying, as he announced his government’s approval of “an official request” by the Health Ministry in Gambia.
The ‘Operation Hernia Humanitarian Mission’ was created in 2005 to send surgeons to operate on hernia patients in less developed but relatively safe areas of Africa, the statement read, adding that for over four years after its establishment, its missions primarily worked in Ghana. And it said in 2010 activities were expanded to Cameroon, Nigeria, Mongolia and Ecuador.
Previous missions, according to the statement, have lasted 1-2 weeks, with surgeons drawn from the European Hernia Society. The surgeons, who basically work on voluntarily basis during their vacations, take along surgery equipment from their respective home countries.
