Election 2011: '1,897 Gambians Registered More Than Once'
Friday, 05 August 2011 15:36
(Pana) - Gambia’s chief electoral officer Mustapha Carayol has disclosed that a total of 1,897 voters registered
more than once, saying that such offenders still had the opportunity to return their cards.Carayol, addressing the press Thursday in his office, said the electoral body, in consultation with the political parties, had decided to give offenders a two-week grace, from 8 August to 22 August, to return the cards.

Carayol warned that after the period of grace, the commission would take legal action against offenders.
“Thump print and facial recognition were used as a means of detecting this. Such unscrupulous acts are uncalled for and quite unexpected from a public who are fully aware of the implications of the wrong they have done,” he said.
According to him, the commission is currently engaged in frantic efforts to ensure that a credible voters' register is produced, saying that the digital system of biometric voters' registration was being used to achieve this.
Carayol said the provisional list of voters had already been published at the registration centres across the country.
He also said some youths were caught in the act of vandalising the voters' list in Kaif, in the Lower River region and that the matter was being investigated by the police, adding that their case would serve as a deterrent.

I was the first to applaud the Gambian government 4 adopting a biometric ID system. Many Gambians still don't understand that biometric id prevents the unlawful practice of ID duplication. They are always surprised when confront with fact that they had earlier registered. Way to go. Everyone should be in the biometric system
