Editorial: Will the arrest of Samba Ndanaan opens the Pandora’s box?

bun_sannehThe accusations levelled against the ex-police boss and other senior officials have made some observers to wonder whe ther organized crime is now rooted in the Gambian society. The gravity of the charges and their ramification in the country’s security system has left many Gambians sceptical about the capacity of the current anti-drug-trafficking campaign tobun_sanneh get rid of influential drug dealers and their accomplices whose activities have caused significant harm to a number of people and communities.
The arrest of businessman Alieu Samba alias Samba Ndanaan, over the weekend, seems to have provoked an added dilemma in some sections of our society.
According to sources, Samba Ndanaan was supposed to supply handcuffs to the National Drug Enforcement Agency (NDEA) after receiving D350, 000 from the then Executive Director of NDEA, Ebrima Bun Sanneh.
“The most amazing thing in this matter is that the decision to award the contract to Samba Ndanaan didn’t get the approval of the Gambia Public Procurement Authority (GPPA),” reveals the source. “Up to the time of his arrest, he has not delivered the handcuffs.”
According to our source, Samba Ndanaan’s arrest will inevitably be followed by the downfall of so many people who helped him in his lucrative enterprise.
Even as Samba Ndanaan is arraigned in court, another drug baron called Eto'o, arrested Monday, after his wife was caught with cocaine, was with the NIA helping them in their investigators.
“This is all about corruption. It has become a veritable sporting activity. Government should do its level best to discourage people from getting involved in such activities. They have deeply tarnished the image of our country,” our source lamented.
It could be recalled that for the past two years Samba Ndanaan has also won huge contracts of supplying vehicle number plates to the police. Unlike the deal of supplying handcuffs, however, everything about the contract of supplying number plates is said to have gone through the normal procedure with the approval of GPPA.

Samba Ndanaan may have the contract to suply the Police with vehicle number plates but he still owes £20,000 sterling the the UK company that supplied him. Not so innocent after all?

Am glad that the likes of Jim understand the source of the problem. A certain segment of the society will not accept Yaya. Just like in America, a Certain segment will not accept Barack (black). It is unfortunate for this group of people. As Jim said, they will call the sun, moon. We cannot change that. But God is not kind to them. That i know. Cus if God was so kind to them as they think, He would have wipe out Yaya for them. Certainly not all yaya's actions are flattery. But he is not the devil who escaped from hell. Lets say he is very corrupt; but he has a foundation that benefits ordinary Gambians, Lets say he spends millions; but it is usually on the very Gambians he rule(He sponsors many families to perform harjj every year). Lets say he owns all the lands, but the produce of those lands go back to poor Gambians. I see him as one whose human rights record is out of whack.

"People need to be warned that when they are hired by yaya, they must not engage in corruption" pacco-p

This has to be the quote of the century.

Pacco-p

Could not have put that better. For some people here, Jammeh, the person is their main problem, no matter what? So they refuse to see otherwise. But what can we do with someone who points to the hot burning sun and insists it's the moon?

Thank you Brother Malick, this type is what we call a Central referee blaming the line-man for not waving his flag for the foul in the middle of the field of play, If this referee cannot see the fouls he suppose to blow his whistle then blaming his assistances, then what a mess in that match !

Sounds like a den of thieves out there!

If the president can give away a million dollars (approx.D27 million dalasis) in one evening what message does that send to others? As a civil servant earning less than ten thousand dalasis a month it would take over 225 years to earn that much!

I am not excusing any corruption but if the center cannot hold, things will fall apart! We have a fool of a leader by whose reasoning its ok for him to be corrupt but everyone else has to be clean.

This arguement might border on the tedious but it is reality stripped bare. The inability to get rid of politicians who have failed the people is one of the greatest misfortunes of Africa politics and i dont see the problem going away soon.

There is an unfortunate pattern of vellifying the president to the extent that we glorify crimes of corruption, deception and theft. Lets' for one moment assume the president is corrupt. Does this mean it is ok for public and civil servants to steal and misappropriate public funds like the way they do now? Certainly not. 2 wrongs dont make a right. And every man is accountable for their deeds. It is pathetic that we just keep ignoring all the criminal acts of the people fired and concentrate on villifying the president. By this behaviour, we are indirectly encouraging all the new hires of Yaya Jammeh to continue the trend of theft and corruption because Yaya will fire them and accuse them of corruption anyway. This mentality got to stop. People need to be warned that when they are hired by yaya, they must not engage in corruption, even if they are convinced Yaya is engaged in it too. Cus Yaya will account for himself one day. Personally, i have no pity for corrupt people.

Manding Morry, This is not because of the Tyrant but because of those men themselves are the bad citizens of the Gambia, if you are backing someone for your own selfish interes, then if your downfall arrive, there shouldn't be any mercy from the public.
These men were the very people who were defending this present regime so, if they started to fall, why should we keep bothering ourselves in their ordeals ?
