Editorial: Who is in control in Guinea Bissau?
Tuesday, 01 June 2010 00:54
For the past few years Guinea Bissau, a near failed state, West Africa’s equivalent of Somalia in the East, has been a persistent reference in the
international media coverage all for the wrong reason. In all this time everything about the country suggests a real source of bad influence for the rest of the sub-region.
And beneath all this is this issue of drug.

The inability of the international community, including the regional bloc of ECOWAS, or its lack of concern for what is going on in the country has never been so evidently demonstrated as in the past two months.
We have heard of coups plotted against regimes; but coup within the military just beats the imagination.
But come to think about it, this is the country where the armed security gets mad all of a sudden and display their beastly nature by butchering their national leader. The word is indiscipline.
Is it safe to give a blind eye to such a country run by an undisciplined army in this era of globalization?
Already the issue of drug trafficking remains a domineering subject in international discourses; and anytime it is raised Guinea Bissau is sure to be mentioned. Its military leaders are in the middle of it. Clearly both Gambia and Senegal are getting their fair share of the problem there - for the former in the form of drug issues and the latter in the form of rebel incursions and probably also drugs.
The Bissau Guinean president, Malan Bacai Sahna, while insisting that his country’s army was “under control,” appealed for international support to redress the problem of drug trafficking in the country.
"This problem is not strictly Guinea Bissau's problem … It is a global problem and I am convinced that the only way to win this battle is to unite our efforts," Sahna reportedly told a news conference at the sidelines of the Africa-France Summit in the French city of Nice, where the issue of drug trafficking forms part of the subjects of discussion.
Mr Sahna’s call for help is not unexpected; the only abnormality about it is he is asking for help against a group of people he is supposed to be in total control of, his armed security forces. It is an open secrete that the Guinea Bissau army is at the center of the cocaine trade in that country. The man who wields real power in Guinea Bissau today, renegade Naval chief and alleged coupist, Rear-Admiral Jose Americo Bubo Na Tchuto, is effectively in charge of this country’s army, the very army President Bacai Sahna claims to be in control of. He is among senior officials in the country’s army sanctioned by the US authorities recently.
This former naval chief is the very same man who abandoned his safe heaven in Gambia only to return home to instigate what eventually became of the country later. And today, despite the threat this man poses to the rest of the sub region and the world at large, by virtue of his increased power in the country, President Malan Bacai claims everything is in control. Is Sahna really sincere? Or is he talking out of fear of being butted out?
In any case such power as he wield is a nonstarter; he can never be safe while remaining at the mercy of goons like the ones in real control in Guinea Bissau.

I GUESS IF ANY IS FOLLOWING MY COMMENTS & REACTIONS ACTIVATED FROM OTHERS COMMENTING, MOST IF NOT ALL, CAN KNOW WHO(the jakass of the bunch, call himself righteousness & any name under the sky)'S BEHIND THIS IMPERSONATION OF MY HUMBLE SELF. BUT FELLOWS, WE’LL CONTINUE TO MARCH ON TILL WHEN GAMBIA'S FREED & THE BARBARERS PROSECUTED IN HARMONY & RECONCILLATION.
I THANK YOU ALL FOR YOUR UNDERSTANDING.
Hear! Hear! I think it is Jim who has been saying on this very forum, time after time that: "Seeing the hot burning midday sun and calling it the moon..." You've just repeated what I have been saying all along, thanks!
BTW, I smell UDP in Kafuta and co et.al. No crime and shame in that. What is a shame and unacceptable is, as I said earlier, the unfounded lies, fabrications and endless innuendo.
Kafuta, some people on broad day light can chose to call it black & stay insisted when it's contrarily actually white as everybody else sees & knows. The word that 'might' only belongs to God who normally ends up punishing His 'entrusted' few He has given the privilege to handle in communities. He ends despotic leaders & associates up in regrets in end. It's not always out of political affliation that everbody make comments here. It's out of moral implications of events happening that matters most in community stability.
In case u r not in tune with international happenings, find out how long Sadam Hussein stayed in power and what and what he did, in terms of development, for his people, and then see how he ended up. He is just one of many, so, never say never!
Every oppression comes to pass, but freedom last...
Ha ha ha Kafuta. UDP + NRP + PDOIS + PPP x (NADD) = a TOOTHLESS bulldog.
The simple reason is just what I have stipulated namely,Unless your change your attitudes and convince the Gambian people that you are a credible, responsible and matured opposition, you are doomed to fail and what you hate most, the abled Professor will be at The State House for ages.
Because of the abiove statement, i have promised myself not to dibate with such people anymore...Regards..REMEMBER U ARE DOOMED TO FAIL UNTIL U CHANGE YOUR ATTITUDE
