Editorial: The Opposition Merger
Thursday, 11 August 2011 22:45
(JollofNews) - Unless we are terribly mistaken, the recent pronouncement by the PDOIS seems to suggest that there is still a strong desire among the
party's leadership for a united opposition in the coming elections. Indeed one might argue that PDOIS has always entertained the idea of a united opposition. What however is new and promising in their recent pronouncements is that the party seem to have taken a soft and conciliatory approach to the process of selecting a single opposition candidate.
For any of this great aspirations to come to fruit though, UDP and other opposition parties must also show flexibility and seize the initiative by engaging the PDOIS leadership in discussions and showing up in these coming rallies so as to consolidate and bring back hope to the Gambians who prefer change. Once the people are mobilised, the leaders must then get down to brass tacks by unanimously selecting a candidate to contest the polls. The people aspiring change wish to see a formidable candidate who will not be shy of forcefully denouncing Jammeh and his policies at all ‘Bantanbas and vous’ while providing alternative ideas. Such a person must be ready to obey and respect all and any agreements that are made at the time of the unification and should be ready to sail the country to much calmer waters than is the case now. The role of UDP in this arrangement is crucial. The party must be seen to be accommodating and respectful to ideas other than theirs and rise above the politics of tribalism that it is often rightly or wrongly associated with by the APRC. Yes the party may be bigger in support but that does not automatically translate to all conquering when dealing with other party. But perhaps what is even more requiring of the UDP is the need to muster the courage and resolve to tackle the APRC's strong arm tactics. The APRC leadership has nursed the notion that UDP is cheap, PDOIS too principled and decent, and the rest of the parties insignificant. The task before all the opposition politicians is to put national interest and forget their egos and differences and rally behind a single candidate. According those Gambians aspiring change, the opposition must always realise that even the worst among them, is better than President Jammeh.

OUSAINOU DARBOE SHOULD BUILD ALLIANCE WITH THE GENUINE OPPOSITION.
When Lawyer pap cheyassin secka was imprisoned for treason during the adminstration of president jawara, it was ousainu Darboe who was taking care of his family. You can come here and write to insult an honourable man. Ousainu is full of conscience and a firm beleiver of social justice.
I blame jollof editorial team for keeping you in this forum.
OUSAINOU DARBOE NEEDS TO BUILD ALLIANCE. WITH GENUINE PEOPLE, NOT WITH THOSE WHO ARE BUSY EXPLOITING JOURNALISTS, DIVIDING THEM.
PDOIS HAS FAILED AND THEY WANT THE GENUINE OPPOSITION TO FOLLOW THEM IN THEIR DECADENCY.THEY ARE HANGING ON GAMBIA PRESS UNION 'SHOULDERS' TO SURVIVE
Ah! so because they "dont have chance", they should boycott? What kind of democracy are you really yearning for? The democracy which goes only your way? You are right, the Jammeh you are anti is 1000s times better than you.
