Editorial: NEA Director snubs JollofNews for being ‘critical of government’
Tuesday, 19 October 2010 10:02
Just about last week, our reporter in Banjul was told by the Director of the National Environment Agency, Momodou B Sarr, that he
would not grant him interview because “Jollof News is critical of the Gambia government.” Mr Sarr said that after the publication of an interview we had with him, some time back last June, he was advised against ever talking to us given our orientation towards the government’s policies. That story, ‘Gambia's environment boss on US Oil spill,’ did generate some discussion among our readers; not that any of those comments were in anyway critical of the government – and even if they were, whatever is critical about the article itself, anyway? Besides, is that not what we are supposed to be doing, debating on national issues?
We only brought this up because some one commented somewhere here, condemning us for ignoring what they felt were positive news about the country and only opening our “filthy big mouths making statements,” while “Jammeh is making actions…”
Presumably, acts such as the ones that aim at intimidating perceived opponents of the regime, like the arrest of female gender activists on fraudulently concocted charges, are what we must be supportive of to be seen as not critical.
By the way, what makes Mr Sarr think we must be supportive of the government for him to grant us interview? Or what makes him think we can not write without having him or some other self-seeking sellouts like him talk to us?
When a government feels it is beyond censure it leaves limited choices for its people. The most popular approach of such a government is refusal to recognize the independent media. This is the situation the Gambian government has the country’s media in today.
And those with less faith ditch their pride; which explains why they will stop at nothing to safeguard their positions, even if they know what they are doing go against the principles of truth.
Well, we are not among those. And we will expose anyone who attempt to do so at our expense.
The society needs to know these people, so that tomorrow they can’t seek to hide behind unfounded excuses.

Have Being busy: I think we need to understand Gambia if one want to bring sanity in that country. When Jollofnews was blaming officials for Jammehs awards, I protested that Jammeh is the cheat here, When BBC report about Jammeh I defended fatou mass jobe njie as merely doing her "job" as many does. These people are not the problem nor are they abusers or murders if U knows Gambia well. If U cannot understand this then trust me, U will never win hearts and minds, since the whole government officials are in bondage. For them the alternative is full of tribalism, vengeance and jealousy. Your comments just strengthen that too since I have read about your comments on fatou Mass jobe and others here too. If U cannot see the root of the problem then the whole Gambia is Yahya Jammeh for U. Scary for them innit. This is my noisy claim for sanity in Gambia if it makes sense 4 U.
Just an advice as to how you can work on your problem of some one using your username.
Register it and there will be a marked difference in the way your name appear and that of whoever is impersonating you.
That said. We hereby call on the person who does this to put a stop to it. Otherwise we will be obliged to release any information that could lead readers to make their own conclusion as to the identity of the impersonator.
Thank you.
are you really serious in your noisy claim for sanity in Gambia. Is this really you, by the way? I can't understand, cos you are the very one who picks up on Jammeh at every given opportunity, even when a good news is reported on him which calls for praises. And here you are, defending some one who invokes his "right" to refuse to talk to the media because they are "critical" of the same government you throw spit on on a daily basis. ARe you sure' Mr Sarr is not a relative of yours? This brings to mind the intention of many of us who make nois here. Is it really about justice or vengiance?
I could remember when we were praising jollofnews and one of us said,People Caution! It is too early to praise this SUKUTARIAN as we all have seen from other newspapers like Echo and mad Freedom news. From Jollofnews,Gamb ia Echo down to Freedom news are all ENEMIES of PEACE,PROGRESS AND DEVELOPMENT OF THE GAMBIA. Jollofnews have lost it RESPECT and now heading to TOILET all its sensible and concious contributors left leaving them with ignorant and failed ones.So keep on being IGNORANT and ENEMIES of your own destiny and Mike Scales and others will help you, taking you as fools and ignorant Journalist to distroy your nation. So Chams hate is what you reward to President Jammeh after he educated your family. You will fail and Jammeh will always RISE.
This is a clear manifestation of how our reckless Gambia government has a dirty hand in everything. How can the country progress if nothing about the government is criticized? Gosh, some of those government officials should go back to school. Criticism is a necessary fuel for any meaningful changes in a country. And through change, meaningf ul progress can be achieved..."That which doesnt kill you only makes you stronger."
Moreover, disreg arding the one-sided twisted pro-government media, any good neutral media would bring to the attention of the citizens, reader s etc what is happening; not just what the government wants them to report. For God's sake, Jammeh and his officials should really grow up...
