Editorial: Another ‘award’ for President Jammeh?

Jammeh_awardWe have been receiving email messages from our readers requesting that we look into the authenticity of the latest claim of an ‘award’ received by Gambian President Yahya Jammeh, as indicated by an editorial on his newspaper, the Daily Observer, on its Monday February 14th edition.
“We wish to congratulate the Gambian leader, His Excellency Sheikh Professor Alhaji Yahya AJJ Jammeh for bagging the International Order of Merit (IOM)Jammeh_award award from the International Biographical Center (IBC),” the Daily Observer wrote.
And it proclaimed: “The conferment of such a highly honoured and prestigious humanitarian award by IBC on the Gambian leader is indeed not a surprise.”
Indeed, not a surprise.
The International Biographical Centre which, according to its website, is located in Cambridge, England, described itself as a world leader in biographical publishing.
On the surface, the company is a business entity as it trades in publishing biographies of people based on payment.
Like an earlier ‘award’ attributed to Yahya Jammeh recently from the controversial IPSP, this one also stinks of suspicion; not only because it charges monetary payment for its awards, but also because the center is widely considered as a scam.
This link by Wikipedia will give a fair idea of the nature of the center.
We hope this will do justice to our concerned readers.

Thankyou my friend. If I own nothing more than your friendship...than you have made me the richer for that gift.

Living and breathing with African's..teaches me something different every day.

I can honestly say..the British people and The Gambian people...are as one.

Those I know in government...are undivided in the hope that you will achieve your desires and fulfil your ambitions.

Steady on old boy...

This has nothing to do with The British government or the British people...

Unlike the Nebraska local government award...which was a government scam or joke..whatever?

This is some small back street "quango" set in the academic centre of Cambridge.

There are many who operate mainly on the internet claiming to be centres of academic excellence.

I recall my African wife paid several hundred pounds for an Open University law course...from an outfit in Oxford...before we realised it was just another scam.

I don't think the British government will do anything with Jammeh other than under the terms of the Conoutou agreement or to franchise directly with The Gambia's institutions ..such as Law.

The expelling of Deputy High Commissioner Joshi...by Jammeh...will live long in the FCO's memory.

I think this award was akin to sending yourself a Valentine...

Sad ?

I doubt this award as the UK and its inhabitants knows very well how deadly this Yaya Jammeh. May be this is another Fatima Jabbi`s propaganda.
If this Award is true then the West are killer supporters and hypocrites.

Whenever this killer president receives award we Gambians say those award givers are either ignorant or hypocrites for not checking first the background of the whole allegations surrounding this man.

First forcing in to power, false promisses promissed, killing of journalists, the student killings, human rights abuses, whitch hunting and poisonings, the arrests of opposition leaders, the dissapearance of Gambians without a single trace,Gambians exiling themselves in fear of there lives, the interlectuals fearing to speak there minds against the odds, the list goes on and on.........

"As drama unfolds the remarkable peoples' revolution in Egypt the brought down Mubarak's30yr dictatorship, we the People of The Republic of The Gambia say enough to oppression, dictatorship, state torture, false claims and force disappearance in our country. We envisage for a total public uprising to bring down APRC government. Long life Operation People catch Yaya Jammeh, Long live The Gambia

As much as his supporters try to present Yaya Jammeh as someone eligible to run the country. we on the ground here know that what we have is just an ignorant caveman in the 21st century running around chasing witches and offering every manner of blood sacrifices that his marabouts recommend to him.

Another award? Yawn.......
The only difference this time is they have learnt to keep it on the low low, after the stinging criticism from past "awards".
