Eat what you grow, Jammeh tells Gambians
Wednesday, 11 May 2011 09:34
(PANA) - Gambian President Yahya Jammeh on Monday urged his people to depend less on imported food stuff and eat
what is grown in the West African nation.Jammeh, who made the call while distributing tractors to Gambians at the President’s office, State House in Banjul, advised his compatriots to be mindful of the kind of food they consume, especially those coming from outside. He said diseases that were previously unknown in the Gambia are on the increase and Jammeh, who is a self-proclaimed doctor, linked the development to people’s eating habits.

“Let’s turn to the farm and work. If we continue to sit down and depend entirely on imports, it will not pay off,” he was quoted as saying, adding that “let Gambians wake up, stand firm, have faith in God and depend on ourselves.”
Jammeh who is fast becoming synonymous with virtually everything under the sun in Gambia, from business to politics, medicine and religion, owns several farms across the Gambia.
His loyalists and party militants coordinate the work on the farms, which attract lots of controversies.
Gambian soldiers, police and ordinary citizens provide free labour on Jammeh’s many farms.
To Jammeh and his supporters, such a move is normal and is in line with the presidential back-to-land policy.
However, critics have continued to condemn the practice of gathering Gambians from all walks of life to provide free labour on Jammeh’s farm.
Some even argue that the practice is more of “forced labour,” as government officials and other citizens are always taken to the farms against their wish.

To sum up my argument, let me ask you this: How was the electricity situation in Gambia prior to the said 17 years of Yaya Jammeh, and how is the situation now?
Just a simple and straightforward answer will be be appreciated. Waiting for your answer before I go further. Remember, the point I raised is that of the electricity situation.
Mike,
You have nothing to offer here. Please don't hijack and distract my civil discourse with Badara. We, (I) want to stick to one issue at a time.
These APRC guys are beyond redemption.
Don't you just feel so sorry for them?
Morally they talk money..not brotherhood or fraternity. For them success is measured by personal gain and what they can get...not what they will give.
Batch, Kang Kang and Soriba...are the "original" three mouse kateers.
" All for none and none for all "
The Gambia is your country and you should wish her all the best in this world. If your fellow countrymen said to you and explain that, a poor country like Gambia can have the best in this world and honestly outlined it to you with proofs; if you really care and sincerely love your country and people, you never ever have in your mind-set that he /she wishes and wants for that country is as result of hatred for Yahya Jammeh or the ruler of that country. How on this earth, can you improve the lives of your people in any aspects of their life if you have such a mind-set? People who honestly support Yahya Jammeh solely for “developments” purpose; I will assure you that he/she will be the first person who will bring a chair for you to sit with a cold drink to tell him more about your ideas and strategies better than the one he is current experiencing. You know very well that Gambia is far from developed with his “good wonders”.
A very fitting qoute:
When you hate someone, you will go all the way acusing that person of raising dust on you when he passes by, even after a heavy rain fall.
We all know what signicant strides Jammeh's government has made in the area of energy, available clean water, food preservation (both in horticulture & fisheries), to name a few. So, look at the hot burning sun and insist it's the moon. Who's headache?
The African patriot will say what Jammeh says.
"Lets be independant not dependant"
Comment:
Well said we are always and ever ready to defend our continent even if it will cost some of us our cheap lives infront of The "Wazungu".
We are not better than Lumumba, Sankara and Samora Marshell of Mozambique.
In the service of Mother Africa we remain
The African patriot will say what Jammeh says.
"Lets be independant not dependant"
It is the ultimate election slogan.
The reality is of course quite different.
The Gambia is roughly importing twice as much as it exports.
All governments are facing 3 key questions...in the next ten years.
Increased demand Requirements...
1.Energy {up 40%}
2.Food {up 35%}
3.Water {up 30%}
The Gambia is in a very poor position in 1. and 2.
Gambia cannot control external rises in oil = energy
food = shortages = price hikes
The worrying question I raise about the Banks is to be discussed at the next G8 summit.
You are better placed to answer if Gambia has the right policies in place
to subsidise any sudden price increases?
I suspect your answer will be "limited"

So Mike a reasonable person can fault President Jammeh's "reasoning" towards Agriculture and food self-sufficiency.
