Eat what you grow, Jammeh tells Gambians

tractors_1-d(PANA) - Gambian President Yahya Jammeh on Monday urged his people to depend less on imported food stuff and eat what is grown in the West African nation.
Jammeh, who made the call while distributing tractors to Gambians at the President’s office, State House in Banjul, advised his compatriots to be mindful of the kind of food they consume, especially those coming from outside. He said diseases that were previously unknown in the Gambia are on the increase and Jammeh, who is a self-proclaimed doctor, linked the development to people’s eating habits.tractors_1-d
“Let’s turn to the farm and work. If we continue to sit down and depend entirely on imports, it will not pay off,” he was quoted as saying, adding that “let Gambians wake up, stand firm, have faith in God and depend on ourselves.”
Jammeh who is fast becoming synonymous with virtually everything under the sun in Gambia, from business to politics, medicine and religion, owns several farms across the Gambia.
His loyalists and party militants coordinate the work on the farms, which attract lots of controversies.
Gambian soldiers, police and ordinary citizens provide free labour on Jammeh’s many farms.
To Jammeh and his supporters, such a move is normal and is in line with the presidential back-to-land policy.
However, critics have continued to condemn the practice of gathering Gambians from all walks of life to provide free labour on Jammeh’s farm.
Some even argue that the practice is more of “forced labour,” as government officials and other citizens are always taken to the farms against their wish.

OK Badara,
To sum up my argument, let me ask you this: How was the electricity situation in Gambia prior to the said 17 years of Yaya Jammeh, and how is the situation now?
Just a simple and straightforward answer will be be appreciated. Waiting for your answer before I go further. Remember, the point I raised is that of the electricity situation.

Mike,
You have nothing to offer here. Please don't hijack and distract my civil discourse with Badara. We, (I) want to stick to one issue at a time.

Proud words Badara...from an equally proud Gambian patriot.{not a griot}

These APRC guys are beyond redemption.

Don't you just feel so sorry for them?

Morally they talk money..not brotherhood or fraternity. For them success is measured by personal gain and what they can get...not what they will give.

Batch, Kang Kang and Soriba...are the "original" three mouse kateers.

" All for none and none for all "

Why on the whole Gambians then? However, if you support Yahya Jammeh for selfish reasons, of course he has provided your development peak, so all others knowing better or want better for Gambian people are haters of Y. Jammeh. I have a successful life and will even benefit more than you in that administration, but people know better and have seen better and it is that better they want and wish for Gambians and is not a record science to achieve only if you stop oppressing people instinct to look beyond. This is what feed human rights abuses, dictatorships, civil wars. Coups, famine, poverty, malnutrition and debts in Africa and now Gambia your own people; So, look at the hot burning sun and insist it's the moon. Who have a headache piling guns, leasing NDEA/NIA, piling state resources, buying votes, paranoid, don’t travel, threaten his people daily? Soriba, LOVE your country, LOVE your people irrespectively and you will even do well for Yahya Jammeh. Trust me!!

Supporting and encouraging such grievances is the essence of any society or organisation or individual who’s aims to have quality development improvement and provides a set of established and refreshed benchmarks supporting the quest to end poverty or “lacking behind”. Despite all these goods things you mentioned, that country still is the one of the poorest in the world with no significant economic activity or development still depending on foreign aid to survive. I know it is not his fault but also know he has no skills to change that. Knowing this facts about your country or even if you argued that, it is now a “developed “ nation, why will one call people “haters” whose only wish their people better by explaining the deficiencies, incompetence and mismanagement of that country, Gambia. I know for sure, you will not bring such a mind-set in your own people.

Soriba if you don’t mean referring to you directly?
The Gambia is your country and you should wish her all the best in this world. If your fellow countrymen said to you and explain that, a poor country like Gambia can have the best in this world and honestly outlined it to you with proofs; if you really care and sincerely love your country and people, you never ever have in your mind-set that he /she wishes and wants for that country is as result of hatred for Yahya Jammeh or the ruler of that country. How on this earth, can you improve the lives of your people in any aspects of their life if you have such a mind-set? People who honestly support Yahya Jammeh solely for “developments” purpose; I will assure you that he/she will be the first person who will bring a chair for you to sit with a cold drink to tell him more about your ideas and strategies better than the one he is current experiencing. You know very well that Gambia is far from developed with his “good wonders”.

"Electricity supply is not even reliable in Gambia in the 17 years he is being there for domestic use and how can farmers and distributors tackle the products of Agriculture and seafood preservation to extent of exporting them in 2020 is just even an insult to common sense."

A very fitting qoute:

When you hate someone, you will go all the way acusing that person of raising dust on you when he passes by, even after a heavy rain fall.

We all know what signicant strides Jammeh's government has made in the area of energy, available clean water, food preservation (both in horticulture & fisheries), to name a few. So, look at the hot burning sun and insist it's the moon. Who's headache?

Quoting Mr. Muzungu:
The African patriot will say what Jammeh says.
"Lets be independant not dependant"

Comment:
Well said we are always and ever ready to defend our continent even if it will cost some of us our cheap lives infront of The "Wazungu".
We are not better than Lumumba, Sankara and Samora Marshell of Mozambique.

In the service of Mother Africa we remain

You open up a very large can of worms here Badara.

The African patriot will say what Jammeh says.

"Lets be independant not dependant"

It is the ultimate election slogan.

The reality is of course quite different.

The Gambia is roughly importing twice as much as it exports.

All governments are facing 3 key questions...in the next ten years.

Increased demand Requirements...

1.Energy {up 40%}
2.Food {up 35%}
3.Water {up 30%}

The Gambia is in a very poor position in 1. and 2.

Gambia cannot control external rises in oil = energy

food = shortages = price hikes

The worrying question I raise about the Banks is to be discussed at the next G8 summit.

You are better placed to answer if Gambia has the right policies in place
to subsidise any sudden price increases?

I suspect your answer will be "limited"

How can he be able to sell them fresh even in a 6 months’ time and the consumers can also store it for months at home still fresh to eat it? Agriculture and food sufficiency without these developments is no feasible. Electricity supply is not even reliable in Gambia in the 17 years he is being there for domestic use and how can farmers and distributors tackle the products of Agriculture and seafood preservation to extent of exporting them in 2020 is just even an insult to common sense. He rather cash in with his Lebanese cronies on Gambians paying the most expensive unreliable electricity rate in west Africa ( check this out) and use millions to buy people and imports arms. Look at this simple article it will explain more
(http://voiceofteachers.org/index.php/VOT/article/view/43/43)

So Mike a reasonable person can fault President Jammeh's "reasoning" towards Agriculture and food self-sufficiency.
