Desperate President Wade orders ‘emergency’ power company audit
Friday, 08 October 2010 23:10
President Abdoulaye Wade has called for an “emergency” review of Senegal’s failing electric grid and an audit of the state-run electricity company, SENELEC.
According to the Senegalese Press Agency, this decision was taken at the end of the monthly ministerial meeting of the government.
On Monday, President Wade finally yielded to pressure and sacked his Energy Minister Samuel Sarr. The Senegalese leader appointed his son in the position, adding to Karim Wade’s already influential position as Minister responsible for international cooperation, air transport and infrastructures.
The past few months has seen some of the worst outbreak of unrests in Senegal in recent years, against a seemingly insoluble electricity problem.
The national statistical agency said in a report at the beginning of this month that the long hours of power outages are costing the country’s formal sector businesses 9.6 million West African CFA francs ($20,445) daily in lost revenue.
