Defense Rubbishes Observer Witness's Testimony
Friday, 05 August 2011 18:50
(JollofNews) - Defense Lawyer Neneh Cham fired the first sparks in the trial of former observer sports editor Nanama
Keita's indicating that the gang who teamed up to sent him to court in an attempt to deflect attention from the serious financial allegations he levelled against them, are not in for a comfortable ride. Cross examining prosecution witness and Observer No2 Alhagie Jobe, on Thursday, the iron witted lady lawyer Neneh Cham told the witness that he either fabricated his story to the court or he himself is an outright liar. After intentionally causing the Prosecution's key witness to modify his
story, the defense counsel told Pa Malick Faye's right hand man, who was slowly sinking into the Banjul Magistrate Court quicksands: The defense lawyer further said. “I must put it to you that you are not telling the truth to the court. Your story was completely fabricated.” In other words, according to the lady lawyer Cham, the Daily Observer's No2 fabricated evidence from the sea of his imagination.
Seen as the first strongest and veritable breakthrough in the ongoing trial between the Inspector General of Police and former Daily Observer's deputy editor-in-chief and Sports editor Nanama Keita, who is accused of giving false information to a public officer following a petition he wrote to the Gambian leader alleging financial malpractices at the pro-government daily, the barrister's assertion culminated from a series of questions she put before the prosecution witness who, far from noticing that he is contradicting himself, admitted that when the accused person signed into his email account, no correspondence with Freedom newspaper was found. A such, Alhagie Jobe annihilated one of the main pillars of his testimony that Nanama Keita was dismissed because of his link with the US-based online newspaper. Another moment of the trial that may provide cause for satisfaction for the defense is when the prosecution witness admitted that the dismissal letter he handed over to the accused person didn't mention any reason, and added that no disciplinary meeting was held prior to the decision taken by the management of the Daily Observer.
The case was subsequently adjourned till August 8, 2011 for further hearing.
