Defense Grills More Observer Witnesses
Tuesday, 23 August 2011 17:50
(JollofNews) - The trial of the former Daily Observer deputy editor-in-chief and sports editor Nanama Keita resumed these
past days with the defense counsel Neneh Cham embarking on an all-out crusade to crush the testimony of yet another Observer top gun, the second prosecution witness Assan Sallah who calls himself news editor.''In his testimony, Sallah shocked the court by saying that the accused person was never a deputy editor-in-chief but only a sports editor'', contradicting the version
given by his boss and first witness Alhagie Jobe who agreed Keita was also a deputy editor. Assan Sallah further indicated to the court that the press card held by the accused and tendered in court was invalid because it was signed by the former Managing Director Neneh Macdouall-Gaye and not the current MD. He said it is common practice that all press cards should be renewed and validated by the signature of a new manager whenever management changes. At this point defense counsel Neneh Cham chipped in: “I put it to you that your evidence regarding the publication is complete fabrication and is not supported by the exhibits that you are holding. “You said the accused person was not the deputy editor-in-chief, can you read the document in your hands”.
The prosecution's second witness complied with the lawyer by reading the paragraph where it is clearly stated that the accused was the deputy editor in chief.
She further asked the witness whose story should the court believe. ‘’Jobe and yourself who is telling the truth?”.
The witness replied thus: ''I am telling the truth” Assan Sallah responded while indirectly discrediting Alhagie Jobe testimony in court.
Lawyer Cham then asked the witness; “Would you be surprised that Alagie Jobe told the court that when the accused logged into his email nothing was found about Freedom newspaper?”. Sallah replied with sound “No”
After a long exchange between the defense counsel and the prosecution, the presiding magistrate decided to adjourn the case till August 31, 2011 for further hearing.
