Debate on Gambia-Senegal mêlée lands man in Court
Tuesday, 21 December 2010 21:31
By JollofNews CorrespondentIf you have ever taken for granted the opportunity online media provides for free speech think again, because Gambians in Gambia surely miss this opportunity.
The restrictive nature of free speech in the country has once again been demonstrated by the arrest of a man whose crime is for saying that ‘Senegal will attack The Gambia’.

The ongoing Gambia-Senegal fracas has brought to light once again the largely unspoken continued trend of violation of freedom of speech in Gambia.
Last Thursday, a local businessman fall victim of his tongue when he suggested that Senegal might attack Gambia.
Karamo Saidy Fatajo, who sells at the Albert Market in Banjul, appeared at the Banjul Magistrates’ Court on Monday, December 20th, charged with conduct conducive to breaking of the peace. Fatajo’s offense, according to court papers, on 16th December, while at the Albert Market in Banjul, conducted himself in a manner conducive to breaking of the peace, by saying that “Senegal will attack The Gambia”.
He was granted bail of D50, 000, with one Gambian surety, on pleading not guilty to the charge.

I just can't help it but to respond to ur statements which are marred with errors and factual inaccuracies to say the least...As far as am concern the only difference between Gambia and Senegal is their names....pls don't jump n tell me they r French n we r English.Badara, the assertion that father Senghore is Serere is factually inaccurate...he is Jolla.Do u know that i know people from cassamance n Gambia who r Senghore n r Jola just like Badjan...some Badjan r Serere n some Jola.Labeh Senghore is jola.
Quote Badara: "Senegal has the right to support any group or fight anyone fanatic who wants to destabilise its territory......"
Yes I agree wit u but Gambians don’t ve d right to condemn d childish idea of Senegal attacking Gambia. What are u talking about?
I agree wit u that d analysis of Casamance to u may be inaccurate but u never told us your own version. Intellectual debate demands that when u refute a claim you should put records straight to avoid falling into d trap of intellectual dishonesty.
Merry X-mas and happy new in advance
Quote Badara: I was in Gambia two months ago trying to negotiate annually rent for my two properties. You should have rent one with a pool (if you can afford it) to enjoy the your sunny days before eruption comes to Gambia.
I'm glad u were able to do that in a peaceful environment and say it in an open forum. I imagine if Gambia was at war with Senegal what will happen. May be u will negotiate 4 d rent of those in d west.
My message in d debate is very clear. I AM AGAINST SENEGAL ATTACKING GAMBIA 4 d simple reason of unseating Jammeh. It will cost innocent lives and we ve better options. If such statements r a stab in d back of some people then I wonder in what state of mind are they.
You can sit and think I have no property to live in or rent to people in the Gambia? No need to show up here is not the issue here. You must be really dreaming my brother to think with all my support I lack a property in the gambia. I told you I believe your knowledge in Economics but if you want to mix this with politics it will fail you. Good day and enjoy the christmas eve as I am leaving the cafe.
I thought you were serious person and cares about your environment. You must have miss Gambia to have a satelite PC or sit in an office with pc to holiday.. I was in Gambia two months ago trying to negotaite anually rent for my two properties. You should have rent one with a pool (if you can afford it) to enjoy the your sunny days before eruption comes to Gambia.
