Daily Observer Points Finger at Unknown Author Disputed Article
Wednesday, 20 July 2011 01:09
(JollofNews) - In the absence of any byline, Daily Oberver management claims they know who wrote article that
landed Sports Editor Nanama Keita in the dock, the court heard in Banjul. Embattled Daily Observer Sports Editor and Deputy editor-in-chief Nanama Keita has his case resumed on Tuesday at the Banjul Magistrates' Court with the prosecution witness revealing that the Observer management immediately knew the identity of the person who wrote the article published by Freedomnewspaper even if his anonymity was preserved. Alhagie Jobe, Deputy-Editor-in Chief of the
pro-government newspaper Daily Observer, told a crowded court in Banjul they identified the unknown author without needing to guess. Jobe is considered by many as right hand man of Observer Managing Director Pa Malick Faye. He based his claims on details found on the search window on a computer frequently used by the accused. According to Mr Jobe giving his testimony, the search results indicated that access to Freedom Newspaper website number of times. Acting on a tip off, Managing Director Pa Malick Faye ordered the seizure of the computer, says Mr Jobe. But Jobe was quick to add this did not prevent Feedomnewspaper to come up with subsequent editions centred on ongoing malpractices at the Daily Observer.
After a long and contradictory testimony, the prosecution witness concluded with the episode of investigators coming to his office, questioning them over alleged malpractices. "He went ahead and wrote a petition to the Office of the President. Subsequently, investigations led to the accused being charged for "giving false information."
The turning point of today's hearing was when defense counsel Neneh Cham-Chongan began cross-examining Alhagie Jobe, who started losing control, before falling into incoherence. The vibrant lawyer who just took over the case from Lawyer Lamin S. Camara asked the prosecution whether it is correct to say that you immediately knew the author of the Freedomnewspaper's article. "No, I did not say it," he replied in a confusing tone turning the entire courtroom into hilarious laughter.
The case was subsequently adjourned till August 4, 2011 for further hearing.

Like Halake said some weeks back, this case is dangerous for Daily Observer Management and should have been dropped. If this was tough for Alagie Jobe, wait until the lawyers get to Pa Malick and GRTS DG Sanyang.
