Coalition of Human Rights in Gambia extends to Scotland
Wednesday, 21 April 2010 19:30
By Yusupha ChamThe Coalition of Human Rights in Gambia, based in the United Kingdom, has launched a new chapter in Scotland, according to a statement received today.
Formed by a group of Gambians based in the UK, as a civil society organisation the coalition is a response to the contentious political situation and claims of human rights violations in Gambia.

According to the release, the campaign in Scotland aims to replicate efforts in London in raising awareness across the UK about ‘‘the worsening human rights situation in the Gambia which are little known to Scottish and the Scotland Parliament.’’
The statement added the coalition will also seek ‘‘to put pressure on the Gambia government to protect its citizens and investigate political killings and disappearances, such as the case of missing Journalist Ebrima Manneh,’’ among other disappeared political figures such as Kanyiba Kanyi, Momodou Lamin Nyassi, Buba Sanyang, Ndongo Mboob ‘‘and many others who are victims of enforced disappearance.’’
The statement went on to say that the coalition’s Scotland campaign, describing it as the first of its kind in that part of the UK, will seek to solicit the support of the cross party committees on human rights, foreign affairs and international development in the Scottish parliament to highlights Gambia’s critical human rights situation.
It added that it will continue to work with its traditional partners - the National Union of Journalist Scotland, civil society and pro democracy organisations - to raise awareness about the Gambia’s human rights situation, citing example of the support by these partners, last year, in the form of a massive demonstration against the jailing of seven Gambian journalists in Gambia.
Alieu B Ceesay, the coordinator of the Scotland Chapter of the Coalition of Human Rights in Gambia, was quoted in the statement as saying ‘‘the systematic violation of human rights and press freedom in the Gambia most not go unchallenged.’’ He went further to say that ‘‘we will use the coalition to mount an all-out campaign against impunity in the Gambia.
Ceesay concluded that they are pleased to launch the chapter in Scotland which he said will serve as an important platform to sustain the campaign against the Gambian government; ‘‘a campaign that I have started last year during Amnesty International Gambia Day of Action standing up against the rule of fear.’’
